Entry level post: Payroll Clerk wanted at Rhodes University

 Main Objectives

Ensure the smooth and efficient processing and payment of salaries on payrolls 003 and 004 and validation of data across payrolls timeously; ensure accuracy; adherence to statutory and legislative requirements, optimizing business processes, striving for operational efficiencies.

Ensure that all risk is removed from the employer and employee by ensuring compliance.  Further, to ensure identification and correction of discrepancies / errors. Payroll reconciliations in compliance with existing policies and procedures thereby not exposing the University to risk

The Requirements

Grade 12 (preferably with accounting as a grade 12 subject) and approximately 2 years’ relevant experience where such experience includes: 

  • Previous experience in a pressurized payroll administration environment where the number of employees are in excess of 3 500 employees on the payroll. Sage People 300 payroll experience will be a distinct advantage

  • Previous experience working with salaries and benefits on a large payroll.
  • Previous experience working at higher education will be an advantage
  • Must be able to perform reconciliations. In the absence of this experience, the individual is expected to be highly numerate, comfortable with information technology and able to learn these processes quickly once on the job.

Selection Process (provisional date, subject to change):

  • Short-listing meeting scheduled for TBC.
  • The selection process that will be followed for this post will include an assessment and/or presentation and an interview.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be informed of the interview date.

Remuneration per annum (Grade 07):

Basic Pensionable Salary per annum:                          R 219,193

Cost to Company per annum (Approximately):             R 309,002

The University reserves the right not to proceed with the filling of the post. Rhodes University has a vaccination mandate as part of its Conditions of Service.  The implementation of the vaccine mandate has been held in abeyance from 01 January 2023.  Should the COVID-19 situation change in a way that the number of cases of COVID-19 pose a threat to the University, the implementation of the Vaccine Mandate will be re-activated and all staff would be required to be fully vaccinated.
