Understanding the Cities Finance Facility (CFF)
Cities are increasingly at the forefront of the climate crisis. Urban areas face severe climate-related risks including floods, droughts, storms, and rising sea levels. At the same time, cities account for approximately 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making them critical actors in achieving climate mitigation and adaptation goals.
Despite the urgent need for climate-resilient infrastructure, many cities struggle to access financing for major projects. Financial institutions often require strong project preparation, technical documentation, and viable business cases before committing investment.
The C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF) was established to help bridge this financing gap.
As part of the broader Climate-resilient Infrastructure Investments in Cities (CIVIC) programme platform, the CFF supports cities in developing climate-focused infrastructure projects and connecting them with funding opportunities. The initiative is jointly implemented by the C40 Cities Network and GIZ.
The programme focuses on three key objectives:
- Preparing climate-relevant infrastructure projects for investment readiness.
- Linking city projects with potential financing opportunities.
- Replicating successful approaches and best practices across cities globally.
The facility has received international recognition and is regarded as a leading project preparation platform under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
What the Intern Will Do
The selected intern will play an active role in supporting the Monitoring and Evaluation team while contributing to strategic communication, donor engagement, and knowledge-sharing activities.

Supporting Monitoring and Evaluation Activities
The intern will assist with regular data collection processes and contribute to report writing. This work will help demonstrate the impact of climate infrastructure projects supported by the Cities Finance Facility.
The role also involves transforming data and project results into compelling impact stories that can be shared with donors, partners, and stakeholders.
Evaluating International Climate Projects
A major part of the internship will involve supporting evaluations of completed projects in countries including:
- South Africa
- Colombia
- Ghana
- Senegal
- Indonesia

Supporting Strategic Policy Advisory Work
The intern will assist in preparing policy recommendations and strategic advice for donors regarding climate-resilient and low-emission urban infrastructure investments.
This includes helping organize donor meetings, preparing briefing materials, and supporting stakeholder engagement activities.
Developing Communication and Knowledge Products
