NMISA Temperature Internship 2026: 24-Month Opportunity for BSc Honours Graduates
NMISA is offering a 24-month Temperature Metrology Internship with a stipend of R6,758 to R8,878 per month. BSc Honours Physics graduates can apply by 25 August 2026.
NMISA Temperature Internship 2026
The National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA) has opened an opportunity for a graduate to gain practical experience through its 24-month Temperature Internship. The internship is designed for a recent graduate with a background in Physics or a related technical field who wants to develop specialised laboratory and metrology skills.
The successful intern will receive a monthly stipend ranging from R6,758 to R8,878, with the amount differentiated according to the applicant’s qualification level. Importantly, the opportunity is intended for graduates who have no prior internship or relevant work experience.
Applications close on 25 August 2026, and applicants are required to follow NMISA’s document and email-submission instructions precisely.
About NMISA
NMISA is a Type 3A Public Entity established in terms of the Measurement Units and Measurement Standards Act, No. 18 of 2006. The organisation plays an important role in South Africa’s national measurement infrastructure.
Its mandate includes providing for the use of the international system of units, commonly known as the SI, maintaining the country’s National Measurement Standards (NMS), and determining and ensuring the comparability of those standards.
Through its technical and scientific activities, NMISA supports accurate and reliable measurement across South African industry, trade, science and other sectors.
About the Temperature Internship
The purpose of the internship is to provide a graduate with practical training in Temperature Metrology. The intern will work in an environment where accurate temperature measurement, calibration, scientific analysis and traceability are central to the work.
The successful candidate will support the dissemination of traceability from national temperature standards to industry. This work contributes to measurement accuracy and helps support South African trade and industrial activities.
The programme provides an opportunity for a graduate to bridge the gap between academic study and practical scientific laboratory work.
Who Can Apply?
The position is aimed at graduates who meet the academic and technical requirements. Applicants should hold a:
- BSc Honours degree in Physics or a related technical field.
- Knowledge of programming and laboratory automation.
- Knowledge of scientific data analysis and simulations.
- Strong understanding of data analysis, uncertainty and physics-based corrections.
- Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Additional knowledge could strengthen an application. NMISA identifies several areas as advantageous, including knowledge of temperature measurement systems, familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025, and an understanding of the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM).
Experience with scientific publications or international collaboration would also be advantageous.
No Prior Work Experience Required
One of the notable features of this opportunity is that no prior internship or relevant work experience is required.
In fact, NMISA specifically states that applicants who already have work experience will not be considered for this position. This makes the opportunity particularly relevant to recent graduates seeking their first professional experience in a specialised scientific environment.
Key Responsibilities
The selected intern will participate in a range of laboratory and administrative activities related to temperature metrology.
Responsibilities will include assisting with the calibration of temperature sensors, preparing calibration certificates and uncertainty budgets, and maintaining accurate job records and documentation.
The intern will also support compliance with NMISA’s Total Quality Management System (TQMS) and ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
Additional responsibilities will involve supporting laboratory planning, including providing budgeting and resource inputs.
Through these duties, the intern can develop practical knowledge of calibration processes, laboratory quality systems, measurement uncertainty and technical documentation.

Ideal Candidate Profile
NMISA is looking for someone who demonstrates more than academic ability. The ideal candidate should have strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy, as precision is fundamental to metrology.
Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills are also important. The successful candidate should demonstrate initiative, a willingness to learn and the ability to approach technical challenges methodically.
Integrity, reliability and accountability are expected, while the ability to work independently and contribute effectively within a team will also be important.
NMISA additionally values creativity and innovative thinking, giving graduates an opportunity to demonstrate how they can contribute ideas while learning within a scientific environment.
Internship Stipend and Duration
The Temperature Internship will run for 24 months.
The stipend is between:
R6,758 and R8,878 per month
The exact stipend is differentiated according to the applicant’s level of qualification.
How to Apply for the NMISA Temperature Internship
Applicants must pay close attention to NMISA’s application requirements because non-compliant applications will not be considered.
Applications must be emailed to:
The email must use this exact subject line:
Internship_Temperature
Only one application per person should be submitted for this position.
Applicants must attach four separate PDF documents. These documents must not be combined into one PDF.
The required documents are:
- CV – “Surname Name – CV.pdf”
- ID – “Surname Name – ID.pdf”
- Qualifications – “Surname Name – Qualifications.pdf”
- Transcript – “Surname Name – Transcript.pdf”
For example, an applicant named Thandi Mokoena should submit files such as “Mokoena Thandi – CV.pdf”, “Mokoena Thandi – ID.pdf”, “Mokoena Thandi – Qualifications.pdf”, and “Mokoena Thandi – Transcript.pdf”.
Important Document Requirements
All four documents must be submitted in PDF format. NMISA will not accept Word documents, photographs, JPEG/image files or links to cloud storage platforms such as Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox.
The CV must be a professionally created PDF rather than a scan or photograph. The applicant’s full name, cellphone number and email address must appear at the top of the CV.
The academic transcript must be a clean and readable PDF showing the applicant’s full record of marks. Applications without a transcript will not be considered.
The certified ID and qualification certificates may be scanned, but they must remain clear and legible when converted to PDF.
Closing Date
The closing date for the NMISA Temperature Internship is:
25 August 2026
Candidates are encouraged to submit their applications before the deadline and carefully check that all four documents have been correctly named and attached.
