To help close this gap, Beyond Climate Collaborative has announced the launch of the European Climate Mobility Justice Academy (ECMJA) 2026, a four-week online learning programme designed to explore the complex relationship between climate change, migration, displacement, and social justice within the European context.
Applications are now officially open for the programme, which will run from 17 August to 11 September 2026, bringing together students, researchers, activists, practitioners, and changemakers from around the world.
The academy aims to equip participants with the knowledge, analytical tools, and critical perspectives needed to engage meaningfully with one of the most pressing global challenges of the twenty-first century.
Understanding Climate Mobility in Europe
Climate-related mobility refers to the movement of people resulting from environmental changes, climate-related disasters, and long-term climate impacts.
Across Europe, communities have increasingly experienced extreme weather events such as wildfires, floods, droughts, and heatwaves. These events have already displaced hundreds of thousands of people and are expected to become more frequent as climate change intensifies.
Recent data indicates that by the end of 2023, approximately 866,000 internal displacements had been recorded across Europe and Central Asia as a result of disasters. Countries such as Greece experienced particularly significant displacement events linked to devastating wildfires.
Despite these developments, climate mobility remains an under-researched and often misunderstood topic within Europe. Discussions frequently focus on migration occurring elsewhere in the world while overlooking Europe’s own experiences with climate-related displacement.

The programme is being delivered by Beyond Climate Collaborative in partnership with Climate Outreach, the Climate and Migration Coalition, and Youth and Environment Europe.
