People Powered Opens Applications for 2026 Climate Democracy Accelerator Programme: Apply Now
People Powered has opened applications for the 2026 Climate Democracy Accelerator, offering funding, mentorship, and training for climate-focused participatory projects in renewable energy and regenerative agriculture.
The People Powered has officially opened applications for its 2026 Climate Democracy Accelerator (CDA), a global programme designed to support governments, civil society leaders, and non-governmental organisations working on participatory climate action initiatives.
The accelerator programme aims to strengthen climate democracy by helping communities play a more active role in shaping environmental policies and climate solutions. The initiative focuses particularly on renewable energy, regenerative agriculture, and just climate transitions.
Applications are currently open and will close on 26 June 2026 at 17:00 UTC.
Climate Democracy Accelerator Targets Global Climate Challenges
Climate change continues to affect communities around the world through rising temperatures, droughts, flooding, forest fires, declining agricultural productivity, and sea-level rise.
According to People Powered, governments and institutions increasingly need to involve citizens, activists, civil society groups, and marginalised communities in climate policy development and implementation.
The Climate Democracy Accelerator was created to support this approach by helping leaders design inclusive and participatory climate programmes that respond directly to local community needs.
The programme encourages projects that promote equitable climate solutions while strengthening democratic participation in environmental decision-making.
Focus Areas Include Renewable Energy and Regenerative Agriculture
The 2026 Climate Democracy Accelerator will support projects focusing primarily on two major climate action areas.
The first area is renewable energy, including initiatives that improve community access to clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and water power while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The second priority area is regenerative agriculture, which focuses on farming methods that restore soil health, improve biodiversity, strengthen water systems, and increase resilience to climate change.
The programme also highlights the importance of linking climate action to broader social and economic systems, including food sustainability, local economic development, and community wellbeing.
Through these focus areas, the accelerator seeks to support practical climate solutions that are both environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive.
Programme Open to Government and Civil Society Leaders
Applications for the accelerator are open to participants from:
- Government institutions
- Civil society organisations
- Non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
While the programme prioritises applicants from Brazil, Indonesia, India, and Mexico, additional places are available for participants from other countries around the world.
People Powered noted that special attention will also be given to applicants from Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
The organisation aims to create a globally diverse cohort capable of sharing climate participation strategies, democratic innovation ideas, and community-based environmental solutions.
Six-Month Programme Includes Mentorship and Funding
The Climate Democracy Accelerator is structured as a six-month, practice-oriented training and support programme.
A total of 30 participants will be selected to develop participatory climate projects focused on regenerative agriculture, renewable energy, and community-driven climate action.
Selected participants will receive support through several programme components, including:
- Dedicated mentorship from experienced advisors
- Interactive online courses and workshops
- Live practice-oriented training sessions
- Country-based peer learning groups
- Localised climate case studies and resources
- Access to the Participation Playbook design tool
The accelerator focuses heavily on practical implementation rather than only theoretical learning.
Participants are expected to design real-world participatory programmes that encourage citizen engagement in climate-related decision-making.
Participants Eligible for Funding Support
One of the biggest attractions of the programme is the financial support offered to selected participants.
According to People Powered, every participant in the accelerator will receive a $10,000 USD implementation grant to support the development of their climate participation project.
In addition, the top five action plans from each cohort will receive an extra $15,000 USD award.
The funding aims to help participants move beyond planning and begin implementing practical climate democracy initiatives within their communities.
Climate Democracy Accelerator Has Already Supported Global Projects
Since launching in 2023, the Climate Democracy Accelerator has already supported more than 50 climate action and citizen engagement programmes around the world.
The programme has highlighted several successful community-driven environmental initiatives, including projects in Brazil, the Amazon region, the Indian Himalayas, and Zimbabwe.
One featured Zimbabwean project focused on helping a rural community recover from cyclone devastation through climate democracy strategies, regenerative agriculture practices, and reduced deforestation efforts.
Other accelerator-supported programmes have focused on climate assemblies, community environmental planning, biodiversity restoration, and participatory sustainability initiatives.
These examples demonstrate how citizen participation can help shape locally relevant climate solutions while strengthening democratic involvement in environmental governance.
Programme Timeline for 2026 and 2027
The application period for the 2026 Climate Democracy Accelerator officially runs from 5 May to 26 June 2026.
The selection process will take place during July 2026, with successful applicants expected to be notified in August.
The programme itself is scheduled to begin in September 2026 following onboarding and due diligence processes.
The accelerator will officially conclude in March 2027, after which participants will continue implementing their climate action plans through March 2028.
This extended implementation phase allows participants to apply the skills, mentorship, and funding received during the accelerator within real community contexts.
Growing Interest in Participatory Climate Solutions
As climate challenges continue to intensify globally, participatory climate governance models are receiving growing international attention.
Programmes like the Climate Democracy Accelerator aim to strengthen collaboration between governments, communities, activists, and civil society organisations in developing sustainable climate solutions.
By combining democratic participation with climate innovation, People Powered hopes to create more inclusive environmental policies that better reflect community priorities and local realities.
The 2026 accelerator therefore represents an important opportunity for climate leaders, policymakers, and civil society actors seeking to build community-driven environmental solutions with international mentorship and funding support.
