UNDP 2026 Environmental and Climate Change Funding Call for Community Organisations

UNDP has launched the 2026 Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP), inviting civil society organisations, NGOs, and community groups in Mozambique to submit environmental and climate change project proposals before 30 May 2026.

UNDP Launches 2026 GEF Small Grants Programme

United Nations Development Programme in Mozambique has officially opened applications for the 2026 Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP), offering funding opportunities to eligible civil society and community-based organisations working in environmental sustainability and climate action.

The programme is aimed at supporting local organisations that are developing innovative projects focused on environmental protection, climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development within Mozambique’s vulnerable terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

Applications officially opened on 1 May 2026 and will remain open until 30 May 2026.

Interested organisations are required to submit project proposals via email to:

[email protected]

The initiative forms part of the eighth operational phase of the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme, which continues expanding community-driven environmental solutions across developing countries worldwide.

Supporting Environmental Solutions at Community Level

The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme has become one of the world’s most recognised community-focused environmental funding initiatives.

Implemented locally by United Nations Development Programme, the programme provides financial and technical support to civil society organisations (CSOs), community-based organisations (CBOs), and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working to address environmental and climate challenges while also improving local livelihoods.

According to UNDP Mozambique, the 2026 funding cycle will prioritise projects implemented within the Chimanimani-Gorongosa-Marromeu landscape in Sofala Province and the Matutuine landscape in Maputo Province.

These regions are considered environmentally significant due to their biodiversity, ecosystems, forests, wetlands, and vulnerability to climate-related pressures.

The programme encourages projects that combine environmental protection with sustainable socio-economic development for local communities.

A Programme With Global Reach and Local Impact

The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme has operated for more than 30 years and currently supports projects in approximately 99 countries around the world.

In Mozambique, the programme has been active since 2005 and has already funded more than 287 environmental and sustainable development projects.

The initiative focuses on empowering local communities through practical action, technical assistance, skills development, and learning-by-doing approaches that allow organisations to strengthen both environmental protection and economic resilience.

UNDP says the programme aims to provide local organisations with access to knowledge, information, financial support, and technical guidance necessary to create long-term environmental impact.

Focus Areas for the 2026 Funding Cycle

The 2026 call for proposals specifically targets projects linked to environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation.

Potential project areas may include:

  • Biodiversity conservation
  • Sustainable land management
  • Forest and ecosystem restoration
  • Climate resilience initiatives
  • Community-based environmental protection
  • Sustainable agriculture practices
  • Water and aquatic ecosystem conservation
  • Climate change awareness and education
  • Renewable energy and sustainable resource management

The programme particularly values projects capable of delivering measurable environmental benefits while improving the socio-economic conditions of local communities.

Why Community-Based Climate Projects Matter

Climate change continues affecting communities across Southern Africa through droughts, floods, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and food insecurity.

As international organisations increasingly focus on local climate solutions, programmes like GEF-SGP are becoming important tools for empowering grassroots organisations that understand the environmental challenges facing their communities directly.

Community-led environmental projects often produce long-term results because they combine local knowledge with sustainable practices and direct community participation.

In Mozambique, where many rural communities depend heavily on natural ecosystems for livelihoods, environmental protection and economic development are closely connected.

The UNDP-backed programme therefore aims not only to protect ecosystems but also to strengthen local resilience and sustainable development.

Technical and Financial Support for Organisations

Beyond financial assistance, the programme also provides technical guidance to supported organisations throughout project implementation.

The eighth operational phase of the programme emphasises capacity building, learning, and organisational development, helping smaller organisations strengthen their project management, environmental planning, and community engagement skills.

This support is especially valuable for emerging community organisations that may have strong environmental ideas but limited access to funding or technical expertise.

The initiative also encourages collaboration between local communities, environmental experts, development organisations, and government stakeholders.

Supporting Documents Available for Applicants

UNDP Mozambique has made several supporting documents available to assist organisations preparing their applications.

These include:

  • Terms of Reference for proposal submissions
  • Budget templates for small grants
  • Official project proposal submission forms
  • Mozambique SGP Operational Phase 8 strategy documents

Applicants are encouraged to review all documentation carefully before submitting proposals to ensure compliance with programme requirements and funding guidelines.

Application Deadline and Submission Details

Eligible organisations must submit their completed proposals before 30 May 2026.

Applications should be emailed to:

[email protected]

UNDP Mozambique has advised interested organisations to ensure all required forms and supporting documents are completed correctly before submission.

The Growing Importance of Climate Finance in Africa

Climate finance programmes across Africa continue growing as governments, international agencies, and environmental organisations increase investments in sustainability and climate adaptation initiatives.

Funding opportunities such as the GEF Small Grants Programme are helping communities access resources needed to protect biodiversity, improve resilience, and support sustainable livelihoods.

As environmental challenges intensify globally, locally driven projects are increasingly viewed as essential components of long-term climate solutions.

For many organisations in Mozambique, the 2026 GEF-SGP funding cycle represents an important opportunity to secure support for impactful environmental initiatives capable of creating lasting change within vulnerable communities.
