South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced its Internship Programme, offering unemployed graduates an opportunity to gain practical experience across various departments within the organization. As the leading conservation authority responsible for over 3.7 million hectares of protected land across 20 national parks, SANParks plays a critical role in biodiversity conservation, tourism development, and socio-economic transformation.

The internship programme is structured as a 24-month placement designed to equip graduates with workplace exposure, professional development, and industry-specific skills. Selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend of R6,335.69 throughout the duration of the programme. However, SANParks has clarified that participation in the internship does not guarantee permanent employment upon completion.

Programme Overview

The SANParks Internship Programme targets graduates who have completed a National Diploma (NQF Level 6) from a recognized South African Higher Education Institution. The placements span multiple departments, including Tourism and Marketing, Communications, ICT, Finance, Legal Services, and Socio-Economic Transformation.

Through these placements, interns will gain practical exposure to the operational, administrative, and strategic functions of one of South Africaโ€™s most important conservation bodies. The programme also supports capacity building in areas aligned with environmental management, tourism development, and community engagement.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the SANParks Internship Placement Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an unemployed graduate aged between 18 and 35
  • Be a South African citizen
  • Hold a completed National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in one of the listed fields
  • Must not have previously been employed in a permanent role
  • Must not have participated in any prior internship or placement programme

The programme is specifically designed for first-time entrants into the professional workforce, giving graduates a structured pathway into the job market.

Work Locations and Practical Exposure

Interns will be placed across different SANParks divisions and geographic locations, including national parks and regional offices. These placements provide hands-on experience in conservation-related administration, tourism operations, ICT systems, finance, communications, and community engagement.

Participants may be required to relocate depending on placement location. SANParks has indicated that applicants who apply outside their area of residence must arrange their own accommodation and transport, taking into account the stipend provided.

Applicants must submit their applications through the official online form. In addition, candidates are required to email supporting documents, including:

  • A recent CV
  • Certified copy of Matric/Grade 12 certificate
  • Certified academic qualifications
  • Academic transcripts
  • Certified copy of ID

Failure to submit all required documentation may result in disqualification.

Applicants with foreign qualifications must ensure their credentials are evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). All appointments are subject to verification and pre-screening processes.

Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for assessments and interviews at times and venues determined by SANParks. The organization has noted that correspondence will only be entered into with shortlisted candidates. Applicants who do not receive feedback within 14 days after the closing date should consider their applications unsuccessful.

SANParks also reserves the right not to make appointments if suitable candidates are not identified.

Stipend and Programme Duration

The internship runs for a fixed period of 24 months, offering participants extended exposure to workplace environments. Interns will receive a stipend of R6,335.69 per month, aimed at supporting basic living expenses during the programme.

While the stipend is modest, the value of the programme lies in the practical experience, professional development, and networking opportunities within a nationally recognized conservation institution.
