The Green Institute has announced applications for the Officially Green Leaders Fellowship 2026, a prestigious and fully funded national initiative designed to identify and empower sustainability leaders across Nigeria. The fellowship aims to select one exceptional participant from each of Nigeriaโs 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), creating a coordinated national network of sustainability champions.
This immersive leadership residency brings together emerging climate advocates, sustainability professionals, and community change-makers for an intensive one-week training experience. The programme is structured to strengthen leadership capacity, promote collaboration, and enable participants to develop practical action plans for environmental sustainability in their respective states.
About the Officially Green Leaders Fellowship
The fellowship selects 37 outstanding leaders through a competitive, merit-based national process. Participants are invited to a high-impact residential training experience designed to build sustainability leadership skills and equip fellows with tools for policy engagement and advocacy.
The programme emphasizes practical outcomes, including the development of state-level sustainability strategies and the establishment of Officially Green State Sustainability Cabinets. By the end of the residency, each fellow returns to their state as an Officially Green State Lead responsible for implementing a 12-month sustainability action blueprint.
The initiative is positioned not just as a training opportunity but as a coordinated national movement aimed at institutionalizing sustainability leadership across Nigeria.
Residency Focus Areas
The fellowship curriculum covers several critical areas of sustainability leadership. One major component is Energy Transition and Green Innovation, where fellows explore renewable energy systems, decentralized energy solutions, circular economy models, and green enterprise development. Participants also gain exposure to climate finance mechanisms and funding pathways to support sustainability initiatives.
Another key focus is Climate Leadership and Governance. Fellows are introduced to climate science fundamentals, policy frameworks, and environmental governance structures. The programme also highlights the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals and strategies for engaging with public institutions.
The State Green Action Blueprint Lab forms the practical core of the residency. During this component, fellows develop a 12-month sustainability roadmap with measurable milestones, key performance indicators, partnership mapping strategies, and monitoring frameworks to track impact.
Participants also receive training in Advocacy and Strategic Communication. This includes policy advocacy frameworks, stakeholder engagement approaches, media positioning, and public speaking. The aim is to equip fellows with the skills needed to influence decision-makers and build partnerships across government, civil society, and the private sector.
Additionally, fellows will design and structure State Sustainability Cabinets in their respective states. These cabinets may include leadership roles such as Renewable Energy Lead, Circular Economy Lead, Climate Education Coordinator, Biodiversity and Conservation Officer, Community Engagement Director, and Research and Policy Analyst.
Fully Funded Fellowship Coverage
The Officially Green Leaders Fellowship is fully funded to ensure equitable participation from all states. Selected participants will receive full residential accommodation for the one-week programme, along with meals and refreshments throughout the residency. Transportation costs to and from the residency location are also covered.
By removing financial barriers, the fellowship ensures that selection is based solely on merit, leadership potential, and commitment to sustainability. This approach supports diverse participation from across Nigeriaโs regions.
A National Sustainability Movement
The 2026 cohort will contribute to a major national sustainability activation designed to position Nigeria within the global climate leadership landscape. While specific details will be announced later, the initiative aims to strengthen collaboration and visibility for youth-led climate action nationwide.
Who Should Apply
The fellowship seeks visionary individuals with demonstrated commitment to sustainability or environmental action. Applicants should show leadership experience or strong leadership potential, as well as the ability to mobilize stakeholders within their states.
Candidates from civil society, academia, public service, the private sector, and grassroots initiatives are encouraged to apply. The programme also values individuals committed to measurable impact and structured sustainability interventions.
Expected Outcomes
Within 12 months of the residency, the fellowship aims to achieve several outcomes. These include the establishment of 37 operational State Sustainability Cabinets, implementation of state-level environmental initiatives, and coordinated national sustainability campaigns. The programme also seeks to strengthen youth-led climate advocacy and create a unified ecosystem of sustainability leaders across Nigeria.
