The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) Internship Programme 2026–2028 offers a 24-month structured graduate development opportunity in Pretoria for unemployed South African graduates across multiple disciplines.
The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) Internship Programme 2026–2028 is a structured 24-month professional development initiative designed to equip unemployed South African graduates with practical workplace experience in government administration and economic development policy environments. The programme will run from 01 July 2026 to 30 June 2028 and will be based at the dtic Campus in Sunnyside, Pretoria.
The initiative is part of the department’s broader mandate to strengthen skills development, promote youth employment, and build a pipeline of competent professionals who can contribute to South Africa’s industrialisation, trade competitiveness, and inclusive economic growth.
Purpose of the internship programme
The dtic Internship Programme is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application within the public sector. It provides graduates with structured exposure to government operations, policy development processes, administrative systems, and economic transformation initiatives.
Through this programme, participants are placed within different functional areas of the department where they gain hands-on experience in public service delivery, research, regulatory processes, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning. The aim is to develop well-rounded professionals who understand both the technical and operational aspects of government work.
The programme also supports the national objective of reducing unemployment among graduates while strengthening institutional capacity within the public sector.
Fields of study and eligibility
Applications are open to unemployed South African graduates who hold a tertiary qualification at NQF Level 6 or higher. A wide range of academic disciplines is considered, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the dtic’s mandate.
Eligible fields include Public Management, Public Administration, Business Management, Human Resource Management, Communication, Law, Economics, Statistics, Accounting, Financial Management, Risk Management, Internal Auditing, Software Development, Agricultural Economics, Development Studies, Supply Chain Management, Occupational Health and Safety, International Politics, Natural Sciences (including Biotechnology and Biochemistry), and Engineering disciplines such as Mining and Metallurgy.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, professionalism, and a willingness to work within structured government systems.
Structure of the internship experience
Successful applicants will be placed within different branches of the dtic, depending on their qualifications and departmental needs. Each intern is assigned tasks aligned with their field of study, ensuring relevance between academic background and workplace exposure.
The internship provides exposure to core government functions such as policy research and analysis, programme implementation, administrative coordination, financial management, procurement processes, communication strategies, and stakeholder engagement.
Interns also gain insight into how government policies are developed, implemented, and monitored within the broader framework of South Africa’s economic development strategy.
Skills development and workplace exposure
The dtic Internship Programme places strong emphasis on skills development. Interns are expected to develop both technical and soft skills throughout the programme duration.
Technical skills include data analysis, report writing, policy interpretation, administrative systems management, and sector-specific knowledge depending on placement. Soft skills development focuses on communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and professional conduct in a public sector environment.
Participants are also expected to develop a solid understanding of government processes, including budgeting cycles, legislative frameworks, procurement regulations, and performance monitoring systems.
Stipend and working conditions
Interns receive a monthly stipend starting at R7 860.50, depending on their highest qualification at the time of appointment. While the programme is not a permanent employment contract, it provides meaningful financial support and valuable work experience over a two-year period.
The working environment at the dtic Campus in Pretoria is structured, professional, and aligned with public service standards. Interns are expected to adhere to government policies, ethical guidelines, and performance expectations throughout the programme.
Application process and submission requirements
Applications must be submitted by 06 May 2026 and can be sent via email, post, or hand delivery. Applicants submitting via email are required to use a specific subject line format indicating their field of study, for example: “Intern2026 – Public Management”.

All qualifications will be subject to verification, and international qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
Selection principles and employment equity
The dtic Internship Programme is guided by principles of transparency, fairness, and employment equity. In line with departmental equity targets, preference may be given to African males and persons with disabilities, as part of efforts to promote inclusivity in the public sector workforce.
Selection is competitive and based on academic performance, relevance of qualifications, and demonstrated potential for public service contribution.
