EWSETA Internship Opportunities 2026 – 24-Month Youth Development Programme in Energy and Water Sectors

EWSETA invites unemployed graduates and TVET students in South Africa to apply for a 24-month internship programme across multiple departments including ICT, Energy, Water, Finance, and Supply Chain. Applications close 22 April 2026.
The Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA) has announced its 2026 Internship Programme, a structured youth development initiative aimed at equipping young South Africans with practical workplace experience in critical sectors of the economy. The programme is part of EWSETA’s broader mandate to strengthen skills development within the energy and water value chains, ensuring a pipeline of competent professionals for future industry needs.
This internship opportunity runs for a duration of 24 months, in line with EWSETA’s Talent Development Policy, and is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical industry exposure.
Programme Purpose and Vision
The EWSETA Internship Programme is structured to provide unemployed graduates and students with meaningful workplace exposure across multiple functional areas within the organisation. The programme is aligned with national skills development priorities, particularly in sectors that are essential to infrastructure development, sustainability, and service delivery.
By participating in this internship, candidates are expected to gain hands-on experience, develop professional competencies, and build industry-relevant skills that enhance long-term employability.
The programme also supports the broader transformation agenda by prioritising youth development and creating opportunities for previously disadvantaged groups in South Africa.
Eligibility and Target Group
EWSETA has opened applications to a wide range of candidates, including:
- University graduates
- University of Technology students
- TVET college students
For University of Technology and TVET students, priority is given to those who require in-service training to complete their academic qualifications. This ensures that the programme also serves as a critical link between theoretical studies and workplace readiness.
Applicants must be young, unemployed individuals who are committed to building careers within the energy and water sectors or related administrative and technical fields.
Available Internship Departments
The programme offers placements across several departments within EWSETA, allowing interns to gain exposure to diverse operational environments. These include:
ICT and Facilities
Interns placed in ICT and Facilities support the organisation’s digital systems, infrastructure maintenance, and internal technical operations. Exposure includes IT support functions, systems management, and facilities coordination.
Marketing
The Marketing department provides interns with experience in communication strategies, stakeholder engagement, branding initiatives, and public awareness campaigns related to sector skills development.
Inter-departmental Roles
Some interns may be placed in cross-functional roles that expose them to multiple departments, providing a broader understanding of organisational operations and coordination processes.
Skills Planning
This area focuses on sectoral research, workforce planning, and skills development strategy implementation. Interns assist in data analysis, reporting, and planning processes that guide national skills priorities.
Energy Sector
Interns in the Energy Sector gain exposure to programmes and initiatives related to electricity generation, renewable energy development, and sectoral training frameworks.
Water Sector
This department focuses on water resource management, infrastructure development, and training initiatives that support sustainable water supply systems in South Africa.
Financial Management
Interns in Financial Management are exposed to budgeting, financial reporting, procurement processes, and general accounting support functions within a public-sector environment.
Supply Chain Management
This area involves procurement processes, logistics coordination, vendor management, and compliance with supply chain regulations and policies.
Governance and Legal
Interns in this department gain experience in compliance monitoring, policy development support, legal documentation, and governance frameworks within the public sector.
Learning Experience and Development
The EWSETA Internship Programme is designed as a structured learning journey. Interns will be mentored by experienced professionals and exposed to real-time organisational processes. The programme emphasizes both technical skill development and soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Participants are expected to actively contribute to departmental tasks while also engaging in continuous learning activities. This dual approach ensures that interns develop both theoretical understanding and practical application skills.
Application Process
Interested candidates are required to submit their applications via email. The application must include:
- A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Certified copies of qualifications
Applicants must clearly indicate the department they are applying for in the subject line of the email. For example: “ICT and Facilities – Internship Application”.
All applications should be sent to: [email protected]
Incomplete applications or those without proper subject line identification may not be considered.
Closing Date and Important Notes
The closing date for applications is 22 April 2026 at 16:30. Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.
EWSETA has stated that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no response is received within a reasonable period after the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
The organisation reserves the right to make or not make appointments based on operational requirements and selection criteria.
Commitment to Youth Development
EWSETA continues to play a significant role in addressing youth unemployment by creating structured opportunities that combine education, training, and workplace exposure. The 2026 Internship Programme reflects this commitment by targeting key sectors that are essential to South Africa’s development agenda.
Through this initiative, EWSETA aims to empower young professionals with the skills and experience needed to contribute meaningfully to the energy and water industries, while also strengthening national capacity in these critical sectors.
