The programme offers a monthly stipend of R8,333.33 and is designed for graduates who hold relevant qualifications in accounting or finance-related disciplines. These positions are suitable for candidates seeking entry-level exposure to government financial management systems and municipal budgeting processes.

Overview of the Internship Programme

The Finance Internships will be based within the municipality’s Budget and Treasury Department. Interns will be expected to support various financial functions, including assisting in the development of financial policies, compiling financial statements, and contributing to management reporting processes.

The programme is structured to provide hands-on learning, allowing interns to work alongside experienced municipal finance professionals. Through this exposure, candidates will gain insight into public finance procedures, compliance requirements, and financial data management within a municipal environment.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will assist in a range of finance-related duties, including:

  • Supporting the development of financial policies and procedures
  • Assisting with the compilation of financial statements and management reports
  • Capturing financial data electronically
  • Participating in reconciliation processes and financial analysis
  • Performing additional administrative and financial tasks assigned by senior officials

These responsibilities will enable interns to develop technical skills in financial reporting, data management, and public sector accounting.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must hold a National Diploma or Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Basic computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Office applications, is also required.

Importantly, no prior work experience is necessary, making this opportunity suitable for recent graduates entering the workforce for the first time. The municipality is seeking candidates who demonstrate willingness to learn, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.

Employment Conditions

The internship will run for a duration of 24 months. Selected candidates will be required to sign an employment contract, performance agreement, and disclosure of financial interests. The municipality may also conduct screening, security vetting, and competency assessments before final appointment.

The recruitment process will align with the relevant municipal policies, including the Local Government: Municipal Staff Regulations and the municipality’s recruitment and selection guidelines.

Employment Equity and Inclusivity

Sekhukhune District Municipality is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. The recruitment process will consider representativity objectives as outlined in the Constitution of South Africa and the Employment Equity Act.

Preference may be given to candidates whose appointments will enhance diversity, particularly women and persons with disabilities. The municipality has emphasized its commitment to promoting inclusive employment practices and equitable representation.

Application Process

Interested applicants must submit a fully completed official application form for employment, which is available at municipal offices or on the municipality’s website. In addition, candidates must include the following supporting documents:

  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Certified copies of academic qualifications
  • Certified copy of Identity Document (ID)
  • Valid driver’s licence (where applicable, with exceptions for persons with disabilities)

Applications should be submitted to the Municipal Manager at Sekhukhune District Municipality. Candidates may deliver applications by post or hand-deliver them to the designated municipal offices in Groblersdal.

Late applications, faxed submissions, emailed applications, or those not submitted on the official application form will not be considered. Applicants with foreign qualifications must provide evaluation certificates from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

Selection and Communication

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Applicants who do not receive feedback within three months after the closing date should consider their applications unsuccessful.

The municipality has also warned that canvassing councillors or officials regarding the appointment process is strictly prohibited and may lead to disqualification.

Closing Date

The deadline for submitting applications is 17 April 2026 at 12h00. Candidates are encouraged to apply well before the closing time to avoid disqualification due to late submission.
