About the Internship
The Advocacy Internship, based at the ARD National Office in Johannesburg, offers a 12-month immersive experience running from June 2026 to May 2027. This programme is designed to equip newly qualified graduates with hands-on skills in research, advocacy, community mobilization, and multimedia communication. The internship is a market-related stipend-based opportunity aimed at fostering the next generation of rural democracy advocates.
The role provides interns with the chance to contribute to meaningful initiatives that directly impact rural communities. By engaging in fieldwork, advocacy campaigns, and multi-media documentation, interns will gain practical experience in translating research into actionable strategies for local development.
Key Responsibilities
Interns joining ARD and RDT will be tasked with a variety of critical responsibilities:
- Conducting fieldwork and research in ARD communities to support mobilization, advocacy, and campaigns focused on rural democracy, including land reform, natural resource management, and rural governance.
- Documenting best practices to share with diverse audiences through research summaries, factsheets, and short multimedia outputs.
- Supporting evidence-based research initiatives and advocacy campaigns alongside RDT staff across the provinces.
- Assisting with administrative and logistical tasks linked to advocacy, community engagements, and organizational objectives.
- Collaborating closely with RDT staff to amplify rural voices and contribute to the organizationโs broader mission of empowering communities.
Candidate Requirements
Applicants should be passionate about rural development and meet the following criteria:
- Valid Grade 12 certificate.
- A qualification in Social Sciences, Political Science, or Communications and Media from an accredited institution.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Interest in rural democracy and commitment to supporting local struggles.
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken) and at least one other local language relevant to the ARDโs operational provinces.
While prior work experience is not required, the programme emphasizes learning and development. Training and support will be provided throughout the internship to ensure the successful applicant can contribute effectively.
