The University of the Free State (UFS), a leading academic institution in South Africa, is calling on ambitious recent graduates to join its innovative Blended Learning Innovation Support and Services (BLISS) team as an Intern in Technology in Teaching and Learning – Assessment. This contract appointment, with a duration of one year, presents a unique opportunity for young professionals eager to build a career at the intersection of education and technology.

Situated within the Centre for Teaching and Learning under the guidance of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic, the internship is based at the Bloemfontein Campus. The successful candidate will be instrumental in supporting UFS’s mission to enhance teaching and learning through innovative e-assessment strategies.

Roles and Responsibilities

Interns selected for this position will engage in a variety of meaningful tasks aimed at strengthening UFS’s digital teaching and assessment capabilities. Key responsibilities include assisting with the development of e-assessment activities, which encompasses creating assessment question banks and scheduling assessments on official UFS online platforms.

The role also involves supporting the development of training materials for objective assessments and facilitating the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of both student and academic staff training initiatives. Interns will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data, drafting reports, and providing hands-on support to students and staff in navigating the UFS online assessment systems. This combination of technical and support responsibilities ensures interns gain comprehensive exposure to both the operational and strategic aspects of digital education.

Inherent Requirements and Eligibility

Candidates applying for this position must hold a Bachelor’s degree or a B-Tech degree at NQF Level 7. The internship is specifically designed for individuals without prior formal work experience and excludes current participants in other learnership or internship programs. Selected interns will be required to sign a learnership agreement with UFS and commit to the full one-year program.

While a postgraduate qualification is desirable, UFS encourages applicants with previous experience as Student Assistants, Tutors, EduTech Buddies, or Teaching Assistants. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems or online assessment platforms will be considered an asset.

To thrive in this role, interns must demonstrate a range of competencies, including results orientation, strategic thinking, and business acumen. The ability to remain calm under pressure, meet deadlines reliably, and maintain a meticulous approach to work is essential. Additionally, candidates must be proficient in MS Office and capable of following established rules and procedures with precision.

Leadership and collaboration skills are also highly valued. Successful interns should exhibit high motivation, energy, and enthusiasm while working cooperatively with colleagues. The ability to build relationships, interact effectively with diverse stakeholders, and make decisions through consultation and guided supervision is central to the internship experience.
