Introduction
The Department of Tourism has announced an employment opportunity under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) for 13 Tourism Monitors. The programme aims to provide temporary employment to unemployed youth while supporting tourism operations at selected national attractions. Successful candidates will be placed for a four-month period ending on 31 August 2026.
This initiative is designed to create short-term work opportunities while equipping participants with practical exposure to the tourism sector. Candidates are encouraged to apply only for placements located within their residential or local areas to ensure accessibility and operational efficiency.
Programme Overview
The Tourism Monitors Programme will run for four months, during which selected candidates will be deployed at various tourism sites. Successful applicants will sign a contract with a service provider appointed by the Department of Tourism. Deployment will take place at attractions closest to the candidates’ place of residence.
The programme focuses on improving visitor experience, supporting site operations, and providing youth with valuable work exposure. Participants will gain practical knowledge of tourism operations and develop workplace skills relevant to the sector.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must be South African citizens and provide a certified copy of their identity document. Candidates must also be unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 35. A matric certificate or equivalent qualification is required to qualify for the programme.
Applicants must be literate and able to communicate effectively in English. Additional qualifications in tourism or environmental-related fields will be considered advantageous but are not mandatory. Candidates must reside within a 40 to 50 km radius of the attractions or sites and provide proof of residence such as a municipal bill or a letter from a tribal authority or ward councillor.
Participants must also be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays, depending on operational requirements. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in the tourism sector and must have reliable transport to and from the workplace.
Disqualification Criteria
Certain conditions may result in automatic disqualification. Only one learner per household will be accepted for the programme. In addition, affidavits will not be accepted as proof of residence. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review all requirements before submitting their applications.
Placement Locations
The programme will be implemented across three national parks managed by South African National Parks. These include:
- Table Mountain National Park – 9 positions allocated within the City of Cape Town municipality.
- Agulhas National Park – 3 positions allocated within the Cape Agulhas municipality.
- Bontebok National Park – 1 position allocated within the Swellendam municipality.
Applicants should clearly indicate the reference number and preferred attraction/site in their application.
Application Requirements
Interested candidates must complete the required application form and submit supporting documentation. Applicants should include a detailed curriculum vitae, certified copies of qualifications, a certified copy of their identity document, and proof of residence not older than three months.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interviews conducted near their areas of residence. Successful applicants will undergo medical examinations and criminal record clearance before final acceptance into the programme.
Important Notes
Correspondence will only be limited to shortlisted candidates. Applicants who do not receive feedback within three weeks after the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
