Introduction
CapeNature, a leading environmental and biodiversity management organization in South Africa, is offering an exciting Graduate Internship opportunity for a GIS Technologist at its Cape Town office. This 18-month contract provides young unemployed professionals with the chance to gain hands-on experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), environmental data management, and conservation operations.
The role is part of the Biodiversity Capabilities team within the Integrated Catchment Management division. The successful candidate will support CapeNature’s Operations Directorate by enhancing GIS knowledge, managing spatial data, and improving datasets on fire and invasive alien species management. By contributing to key conservation decisions, the intern will gain practical experience at the intersection of environmental management, technology, and biodiversity conservation.
Key Responsibilities
The Graduate Intern GIS Technologist will play a pivotal role in multiple operational areas, including:
1. GIS Data Compliance and Field Support
- Ensuring GIS datasets adhere to South African legislation as well as CapeNature’s policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Assisting in the collection, verification, and management of spatial data.
- Providing real-time GIS data and mapping support during active fire suppression operations, serving as part of the Incident Management Team.
2. Conversion of Historical and Operational Data
- Converting raw field data into structured, usable databases for operational and strategic planning.
- Collaborating with Fire Protection Associations (FPAs), District Municipalities, and CapeNature’s internal teams to standardize mapping tools.
- Supporting integrated understanding of fire maps, fire breaks, veld age, fire frequency, and invasive alien species densities.
3. Reporting and Strategic Contributions
- Assisting in the preparation of CapeNature’s annual technical reports, including the State of Conservation Report, Annual Fire Report, and Annual Invasive Species Report.
- Contributing to CapeNature’s Five-Yearly Catchment-to-Coast Strategy (C2C) and associated yearly reports through mapping, analysis, and statistical support.
- Participating in internal capability development interventions and in-house GIS training sessions.
Eligibility and Requirements
To be considered for this internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Be a young, unemployed professional.
- Hold a Natural Science degree (NQF 7 or higher) in Geomatics, Environmental Management, Conservation Science, Ecological Science, Biological Science, or Zoological Science.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of ArcGIS and QGIS software.
- Have experience with cartography, map reading, geometry, mathematics, and GPS technology.
- Possess a valid Code EB08 driver’s license and no criminal record.
