Sasol Mainstream Bursary Programme 2027 Opens for Engineering and Science Students

Sasol invites applications for its 2027 Mainstream Bursary Programme supporting full-time engineering and science degrees. Applications open 1 April and close 17 May 2026.

Sasol has officially opened applications for its South African Mainstream Bursary Programme for the 2027 academic year. The bursary provides comprehensive financial and developmental support to students pursuing full-time university studies in engineering and science-related disciplines. Applications opened on 1 April 2026 and will close on 17 May 2026, offering aspiring STEM professionals an opportunity to study with industry-backed support.

Comprehensive Financial and Developmental Support

The Sasol Mainstream Bursary Programme is designed to support academically strong students throughout their university journey. Beyond financial assistance, the programme offers developmental support, mentorship, and exposure to industry practices. Upon successful completion of their studies, bursary recipients may be considered for employment within Sasol through its Graduate Development Programmes.

However, applicants should note that the bursary includes a work-back and/or payback obligation, meaning beneficiaries are expected to work for Sasol after graduation or repay the funding under certain conditions.

Undergraduate Fields of Study

The bursary supports full-time undergraduate degrees (not diplomas) in engineering and science. Applicants must study at recognised South African universities, and distance learning institutions such as University of South Africa are not eligible. Additionally, applicants must have studied pure Mathematics, as Technical Maths or Maths Literacy is not accepted.

Eligible undergraduate fields include:

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Chemistry (Honours required)
  • Geology (Honours required)
  • Data Science (Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research)

The programme also supports Bachelor of Engineering Technology studies at Universities of Technology in Mine Surveying.

Postgraduate Opportunities

In addition to undergraduate funding, Sasol offers postgraduate bursaries for M.Sc., M.Eng., and PhD studies, particularly in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. These postgraduate awards aim to support research aligned with South Africaโ€™s economic growth and sustainability priorities.

Research areas include:

  • Chemical Engineering (Fluid Dynamics, Process Modelling, Thermodynamics, Reactor Technology, Separation Technology)
  • Chemistry (Analytical Chemistry, Catalysis, Polymer Science, Environmental Science)
  • Data Science (Applied Mathematics, Statistics)
  • Cyber Security

Successful postgraduate candidates will collaborate with Sasol technical experts and academic supervisors to develop research proposals aligned with sustainability and circular economy goals.

Important Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet several criteria to qualify for the bursary. Candidates must be South African citizens, under the age of 30 at the time of application, and committed to full-time study at a recognised university. Only one application per student is permitted, and incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.

The bursary is awarded for standard degree programmes within the minimum study period, and hybrid or combined degrees are not eligible. Students must also provide accurate academic information, as incorrect or misleading details may result in disqualification.

Selection Process and Competitiveness

The Sasol bursary programme is highly competitive, with limited awards available. Shortlisting is based on academic performance, alignment with business needs, and overall candidate potential. For matriculants, Grade 11 results are typically used during the initial application stage, while final Grade 12 results must remain consistent for the bursary to be activated.

Candidates who are shortlisted may be invited to interviews, where they will be assessed on academic capability, career aspirations, and alignment with Sasolโ€™s operational requirements.

Application Guidelines

All applications must be submitted online through the official Sasol bursary platform before 17 May 2026. Applications submitted via email or outside the official system will not be considered. Supporting documentation must be complete, and applicants are encouraged to apply early to avoid last-minute issues.

Students experiencing technical challenges during the application process are advised to contact the designated support channel provided by Sasol.

Launching Careers in STEM

The Sasol Mainstream Bursary Programme continues to play a significant role in developing future engineers and scientists in South Africa. By offering financial support, professional development, and potential employment opportunities, the programme provides a strong pathway for students pursuing careers in energy, chemicals, and industrial sectors.

For ambitious students aiming to build careers in science and engineering, this bursary represents a valuable opportunity to access quality education and industry exposure while contributing to South Africaโ€™s future innovation and sustainability efforts.
