The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) has announced a call for applications for twenty Youth Technical Experts to participate in the appraisal of the African Youth Charter as it marks its 20th anniversary in 2026. This continental initiative is being implemented in collaboration with YouLead Africa and Restless Development.
The opportunity offers young Africans a chance to contribute to policy research, governance dialogue, and youth development across the continent. Selected participants will receive a stipend of USD 1,000 for the duration of the assignment and gain exposure to continental-level policymaking processes. A Continental Initiative Marking the African Youth Charter @20
In 2026, the African Youth Charter reaches a significant milestone, celebrating two decades of commitment to youth empowerment, participation, and development across Africa. The anniversary provides an opportunity to evaluate progress made by African Union member states and identify gaps in implementation.
Through this initiative, the APRM seeks to engage young professionals to assess how governments, regional bodies, civil society organizations, and development partners have implemented youth-focused policies. Role of the Youth Technical Experts
Selected Youth Technical Experts will conduct participatory, evidence-based assessments related to youth governance and development. Their work will involve evaluating the implementation of key frameworks, including the Agenda 2063 and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
Participants will generate actionable recommendations aimed at strengthening youth inclusion and improving governance systems across Africa. Their contributions will also help amplify youth perspectives within continental policy discussions.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be between 18 and 35 years old
- Be a national of an African Union member state
- Be active in civil society, youth networks, academic institutions, or community organizations
- Demonstrate interest in governance, youth engagement, or development
- Be available for approximately 3–4 months (May–August 2026)
- Be proficient in English and/or French
- Have experience in research, advocacy, or policy analysis (preferred but not mandatory)
The programme encourages applications from underrepresented groups, including young women, youth with disabilities, and individuals from rural or conflict-affected communities.
