SAOTA 2026 Student Internship Programme

SAOTA is offering a three-week architecture internship in Cape Town for final-year undergraduate students in South Africa. Apply before 17 May 2026 with your portfolio and academic transcript.

South African architecture students seeking real-world exposure and professional development have an exciting opportunity through the 2026 Student Internship Programme offered by SAOTA. This highly competitive three-week internship is designed specifically for final-year undergraduate architecture students who want to gain valuable industry experience before graduating.

The internship will take place in Cape Town, where selected students will be immersed in a professional architectural environment, gaining hands-on exposure to the firmโ€™s operations, design processes, and project workflows. With only a limited number of positions available, interested candidates are encouraged to apply early before the application deadline of 17 May 2026.

A Structured Introduction to Professional Architecture

The SAOTA internship programme is carefully structured to prepare students for their transition from academic study to professional practice. Participants will engage in a series of learning activities and practical assignments aimed at developing both technical and professional competencies.

One of the first components of the programme is the company induction, where interns will gain insight into the daily operations of architects and support departments. This orientation introduces students to the firmโ€™s workflow, collaborative processes, and design culture. It also provides training on the internal systems used to manage projects effectively.

Students will also participate in Design EXCO sessions, which offer a deeper understanding of the companyโ€™s design philosophy and creative approach. These sessions allow interns to observe how conceptual ideas evolve into detailed architectural solutions.

Mentorship and Professional Registration Guidance

An important highlight of the internship is the Mentorship Programme presentation. During this session, students will learn about SAOTAโ€™s in-house mentorship initiative designed to support newly graduated architects in achieving professional registration with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession. This guidance provides clarity on the steps required to progress from graduate status to becoming a registered professional architect in South Africa.

By understanding the pathway to registration early, interns can better plan their career trajectories and align their learning goals with professional requirements.

Research and Resource Centre Experience

Another key component of the internship is the Resource Centre Orientation and Project Assignment. Students will explore SAOTAโ€™s extensive library and research resources, working alongside the research team to contribute to the knowledge base. This assignment not only enhances research skills but also encourages critical thinking and innovation in architectural design.

Through this experience, interns gain exposure to the importance of research in shaping contemporary architecture and supporting sustainable, well-informed design decisions.

Technical Skills Development

The internship also focuses heavily on building technical competencies. Participants will receive an Introduction to REVIT training, enabling them to develop foundational skills in one of the most widely used architectural design software platforms.

Additionally, interns will take part in Building Information Modeling (BIM) training and virtual reality sessions. These sessions introduce students to advanced digital tools used in modern architecture, allowing them to visualise projects and understand spatial design in immersive environments. Such exposure ensures that interns are better prepared for the technology-driven demands of the architectural profession.

Community Engagement and Site Exposure

SAOTA also incorporates a strong social responsibility component into the internship. Students will participate in a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) visit, which includes engagement with the 9Miles Project, a non-profit organisation supported by the firm. This visit highlights the role architects can play in community development and social impact initiatives.

Interns will also benefit from site visits to SAOTA projects, either completed or currently under construction. These visits allow students to observe architectural concepts translated into physical structures, offering valuable insight into construction processes, materials, and project management.

Hands-On Project Work

Beyond structured learning sessions, interns will gain project work experience by assisting teams on ongoing assignments. This hands-on exposure provides practical opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge, collaborate with experienced professionals, and contribute to real-world architectural solutions.

This combination of mentorship, training, and practical work experience makes the programme an excellent stepping stone for students preparing to enter the architectural profession.

Eligibility Criteria

The internship is open only to current third-year Bachelor of Architecture students, including BAS, BArch, or BSc Architecture programmes. Applicants must be able to attend the internship in Cape Town for the full duration of three weeks and must arrange their own accommodation.

Additional requirements include:

  • Must be a South African resident with a valid South African ID
  • Must have a strong academic transcript
  • Must submit a high-quality design portfolio
  • Must be available for the entire internship period

Due to the competitive nature of the programme, candidates with strong academic performance and creative portfolios will have an advantage.

By combining mentorship, technical training, research assignments, and real project involvement, the programme equips students with the skills and confidence needed to transition successfully into their architectural careers.
