The programme offers traineeships of up to six months, with a tentative start date in June 2026. Successful candidates will contribute to the delegation’s activities focused on strengthening relations between the European Union and South Africa. Exposure to EU–South Africa Relations
During the traineeship, participants will play an active role in supporting the work of the Political, Press and Information Section. Trainees will also collaborate with colleagues across other sections of the delegation where relevant.
A key responsibility will involve analysing the dynamics of the partnership between the European Union and South Africa. This work will help trainees gain insights into political cooperation, economic engagement, and shared priorities such as human rights and international development.
Trainees will monitor political developments in South Africa and developments in South African foreign affairs. Under guidance from experienced staff, they will assist in drafting political reports and briefings that inform the delegation’s work. Research and Reporting Responsibilities
Participants will conduct both short-term and long-term research on issues related to foreign affairs, domestic politics, and human rights. This research supports evidence-based decision-making and helps the delegation maintain a strong understanding of developments relevant to EU interests.
Trainees will also collate information about EU legislation and policies relevant to South Africa. This material is shared with stakeholders and the wider public, strengthening transparency and public awareness of EU engagement in the country.
Another important aspect of the role involves attending public events, seminars, and conferences. Trainees will observe discussions on policy and diplomacy, then prepare reports summarising key outcomes and insights. This exposure helps participants build professional networks and deepen their understanding of international relations.
Public Diplomacy and Communication Support
In addition to research and reporting tasks, trainees will assist with public diplomacy efforts. This includes providing administrative support for events, visits organised by the delegation, and missions from headquarters.
The traineeship also includes opportunities to support the delegation’s social media activities. Participants may propose content ideas, draft posts, and contribute to communication strategies that highlight EU initiatives and partnerships in South Africa. This element of the programme helps trainees develop communication skills within a diplomatic context.
Trainees may also support coordination with EU Member States by helping prepare meetings with EU counsellors and reporting on discussions. This offers valuable insight into multilateral collaboration and policy coordination.
Another unique component of the programme involves supporting the EU Delegation’s alumni initiatives. Trainees may help implement alumni strategies, update digital platforms, and manage databases. This work contributes to maintaining long-term relationships with individuals who have previously engaged with EU programmes.
Eligibility Requirements
The traineeship is open to applicants currently residing in South Africa, taking into account local health and security conditions. Candidates must also have the right to work in South Africa or hold a valid work permit, with supporting documentation submitted as part of the application.
Applicants must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as international relations, law, social sciences, politics, economics, or a similar discipline. Strong English language skills, both written and spoken, are essential, along with excellent research and writing abilities.
The delegation is seeking candidates who are committed, organised, and capable of completing tasks within deadlines. Applicants should also demonstrate a strong interest in diplomacy and international cooperation.
Additional qualifications that may strengthen an application include an extra degree in another field and the ability to communicate in multiple languages, particularly official South African languages or languages of the European Union.

Financial Support and Important Notes

The traineeships will be offered in compliance with local legislation and, where applicable, the legislation of the candidate’s country of origin. EU citizens must also provide proof of insurance covering pandemic risks and repatriation costs, along with any required visa or residence permits.
