Overview of the Internship Programme
The YES HSE Graduate Internship is designed to help young professionals gain practical knowledge and workplace experience within the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) department. The selected candidate will work closely with the Plant HSE Manager and the Country HSE Manager, assisting with safety processes, compliance monitoring, and environmental initiatives across the facility.
The programme will run for 12 months and aims to equip the graduate with both technical and operational experience in health and safety management within an industrial manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
During the internship, the trainee will participate in a wide range of HSE activities aimed at improving safety standards and ensuring compliance with regulations.
One of the primary responsibilities will involve collecting and reporting incident data, including FR1T and FR2T incident reporting documentation. This information will be analyzed and shared with the HSE Manager on a monthly basis to help track workplace safety performance.
The intern will also assist with monitoring and distributing transversal safety memos throughout the plant, ensuring that all departments acknowledge the communications and implement required actions.
Another important duty will involve encouraging employees to report incidents and near misses, helping to strengthen the companyโs proactive safety culture. By promoting transparent reporting, the trainee contributes to identifying potential risks before they escalate into serious incidents.
The internship will also include conducting daily safety audits and Gemba tours, which involve observing workplace activities and identifying areas where safety improvements can be made.
Additionally, the trainee will support the organization of HSE committee meetings, record minutes during meetings, and assist with monitoring safety improvement initiatives.
Additional Learning Opportunities
Beyond routine safety tasks, the HSE trainee will gain exposure to several specialized functions within the department.
These include assisting with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 audits, which evaluate environmental and occupational health and safety management systems. The trainee will also help monitor the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) across plant operations.
Other responsibilities may involve supporting contractor permit management, issuing safety permits where necessary, and responding to Injury on Duty (IOD) enquiries from the Department of Labour.
The trainee will also contribute to improving the HSE training center, coordinate clinic activities within the facility, and help manage safety improvement suggestions submitted by employees.
Through these experiences, the intern will develop a deeper understanding of how safety management systems operate in a large industrial environment.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants interested in the internship must hold a National Diploma in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Health, Environmental Management, or a related HSE discipline.
The programme is aimed at recent graduates with little or no professional experience, typically ranging from 0 to 1 year of experience in a health and safety role.
Candidates must also meet several additional requirements:
- Be between 18 and 35 years of age
- Have never previously participated in the YES Youth Programme
- Be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
