Africa Research Excellence Fund Launches 2026/27 Research Development Fellowship to Empower Africa’s Emerging Health Leaders

The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) invites early career African researchers to apply for the 2026/27 Research Development Fellowship. Successful applicants will receive up to £47,000 for a 3–9 month placement at leading research institutions. Deadline: 8 May 2026.

The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) has officially opened applications for the 2026/27 Research Development Fellowship (RDF), a competitive programme designed to strengthen the research capacity of Africa’s emerging leaders in human health.

The fellowship aims to equip early career researchers with advanced skills, international exposure, and structured mentorship, enabling them to contribute more effectively to addressing critical health challenges across the continent.

Advancing Research Leadership in Africa

The Research Development Fellowship forms part of AREF’s broader mission to enhance Africa-led research excellence. Recognizing that early career researchers often face systemic barriers — including limited access to mentorship, funding, and global collaboration — the programme provides targeted support to bridge these gaps.

The initiative is specifically designed for research-active postdoctoral scientists and clinicians who are nationals of African countries and employed within African institutions.

Through a structured placement and institutional backing, fellows are expected to accelerate their professional development and strengthen their long-term research trajectories.

Fellowship Structure and Financial Support

The AREF Research Development Fellowship offers:

  • A placement lasting three to nine months at a leading research institution in the United Kingdom, Europe, or Africa.
  • Additional pre- and post-placement support at the fellow’s home institution.
  • Funding of up to £47,000 to cover eligible costs.

While AREF does not reimburse the fellow’s employing organization for salary during the placement, the funding package supports reasonable expenses, including:

  • Accommodation
  • Travel
  • Subsistence
  • Training costs

This model ensures that fellows can fully immerse themselves in their host institution’s research environment without undue financial strain.

Who Is Eligible?

The fellowship targets early career researchers defined as:

  • Research-active postdoctoral scientists or clinicians
  • Individuals holding higher qualifications
  • Nationals of African countries
  • Researchers currently employed within Africa

Applicants are advised to carefully review the detailed eligibility criteria provided in the official guidance documents before initiating their application.

Application Process

Prospective applicants must complete the official application form via the online portal:
https://programmes.aref-africa.org.uk/

AREF strongly advises candidates to read the following guidance documents thoroughly before developing their proposal:

  • Scheme Information
  • Guidance on Completing Application Forms
  • AREF Terms and Conditions

The deadline for submission of all application documents is:

13:00 hours GMT on 08 May 2026

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Institutional Engagement Is Essential

AREF emphasizes the importance of early engagement with senior leadership at both the Employing Organisation and the Host Organisation. Applicants are required to discuss their fellowship plans in the context of their broader career development strategy.

Support from sponsors and senior institutional leaders is critical to ensuring alignment between the fellowship placement and the applicant’s long-term research objectives.

This structured approach reinforces sustainability — ensuring that skills gained during the placement are effectively integrated into the home institution upon return.

Notification and Fellowship Start Dates

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications by December 2026.

Successful fellowships may commence between June 2027 and December 2027, allowing time for planning and logistical arrangements.

Focus on Human Health Research

The Research Development Fellowship is centered on addressing significant challenges in human health. AREF fellows typically engage in research areas that may include:

  • Infectious diseases
  • Non-communicable diseases
  • Public health systems
  • Clinical research methodologies
  • Health innovation and implementation science

By strengthening research leadership within these domains, AREF contributes to sustainable improvements in health outcomes across Africa.

Beyond Funding: Building Long-Term Capacity

The fellowship is not solely about financial support. It represents a comprehensive professional development pathway that includes:

  • Exposure to world-class research environments
  • Access to advanced methodologies and technologies
  • Mentorship from established researchers
  • Strengthened international collaborations
  • Enhanced grant-writing and research leadership skills

Upon completion, fellows are expected to apply their expanded competencies within their home institutions, contributing to knowledge generation and mentoring the next generation of African researchers.

Additional Resources and Engagement

AREF has provided supplementary materials to support applicants, including a recorded webinar outlining essential details regarding the application process. Although the video references the 2025/26 cohort, it provides valuable insight into preparing a competitive proposal.

Researchers are encouraged to stay informed by following AREF’s updates on social media platforms such as Twitter and LinkedIn, as well as subscribing to the organization’s newsletter.

For further questions not addressed in the scheme documentation, applicants may use the “Contact Us” feature available on the portal homepage. Queries should preferably be submitted by 27 April 2026 to ensure timely guidance before the application deadline.

A Strategic Opportunity for Emerging Research Leaders

The 2026/27 AREF Research Development Fellowship presents a strategic opportunity for early career African researchers committed to advancing human health research. By combining international placement, institutional support, and structured mentorship, the programme strengthens Africa’s research ecosystem from within.

For eligible researchers prepared to invest in their professional growth and contribute to impactful health research, this fellowship represents a significant and timely opportunity.
