Vilcek Foundation Grants: Empowering Nonprofits to Celebrate Immigrant Contributions
Grantmaking lies at the heart of the Vilcek Foundation’s mission. Through its grants program, the foundation seeks to recognize and celebrate the profound contributions immigrants have made to the United States, while also fostering a broader appreciation for the arts and sciences. By supporting mission-driven nonprofit organizations, the Vilcek Foundation plays a critical role in strengthening communities, amplifying diverse voices, and encouraging innovative approaches to cultural and social impact.
The foundation’s grantmaking strategy is grounded in the belief that nonprofits are essential drivers of creativity, education, and social progress. Through targeted funding, the Vilcek Foundation enables organizations to expand their reach, deepen their impact, and serve immigrant communities in meaningful and lasting ways.
Who the Vilcek Foundation Supports
The Vilcek Foundation invites grant applications from nonprofit organizations that focus specifically on supporting immigrants in the arts, sciences, education, or through social services. Priority is given to organizations whose missions align closely with the foundation’s values and whose work highlights the role of immigrants in enriching American society.
Beyond mission alignment, the foundation looks for organizations that approach their work creatively. Ideal grant recipients are those that design and implement innovative programs, services, or projects that distinguish them from others in their field. Whether through original programming, new operational models, or unique community engagement strategies, successful applicants demonstrate how their work produces meaningful outcomes.
In addition to its open application process, the Vilcek Foundation also awards a limited number of Institutional and Discretionary Grants each year. These grants are identified and initiated directly by the foundation and support organizations that closely align with its strategic priorities.

- Be based in the United States or U.S. territories
- Conduct activities and expenditures primarily within the United States or U.S. territories

Eligible organizations must also be able to provide the following documentation:

These requirements help ensure transparency, financial responsibility, and organizational readiness.
Grant Restrictions to Note
While the Vilcek Foundation supports a wide range of nonprofit activities, certain types of funding requests are not eligible. The foundation does not award grants:
- To organizations working with fiscal sponsors
- In support of scientific research
- For capital projects or capital campaigns
- To cover costs of galas, award ceremonies, or fundraising-focused events
- To K–12 or charter schools, despite acknowledging the importance of arts education

- As renewable funding—all grants are one-time awards
Additionally, past grantees must observe a two-cycle waiting period before reapplying. For example, an organization that received funding in 2025 would be eligible to reapply in 2028.
Impact and Community Focus
The Vilcek Foundation’s grants are designed to help nonprofits expand their reach, engage diverse audiences, and advance their missions. The foundation values originality, creativity, and dedication to service, and seeks partners who demonstrate a deep commitment to the communities they support.
The impact of these grants is reflected in the experiences of past recipients. As noted by Beckie Stocchetti of the Hawai‘i International Film Festival, partnership with the Vilcek Foundation has enabled the festival to celebrate immigrant artists in film, strengthen community connections, and create platforms for storytelling that bring people together across cultures.
Such partnerships exemplify the foundation’s vision: empowering organizations to create spaces where immigrant contributions are recognized, shared, and valued.
A Commitment to Lasting Impact
Nonprofit institutions play an essential role in enriching communities, advancing knowledge, and providing access to cultural and educational resources. Through its grants program, the Vilcek Foundation reaffirms its commitment to supporting organizations that not only serve immigrants but also help shape a more inclusive and appreciative society.
By investing in innovative, mission-driven nonprofits, the Vilcek Foundation ensures that immigrant voices and contributions continue to inspire, educate, and strengthen communities across the United States.
