Apply for Transnet Learnership Programme 2026

Transnet Corporate Centre invites eligible South African youth in the Western Cape to apply for the 12-month Work Integrated Learner (Technical) Programme in Saldanha. Closing date: 16 January 2026.

The Transnet Corporate Centre continues to play a pivotal role in developing South Africa’s future workforce through its Work Integrated Learner (Technical) Programme, scheduled to run for a 12-month period. Based in Saldanha, Western Cape, this opportunity is tailored for students and recent graduates seeking to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world technical application.

Offered under the Youth Development function within Transnet, the programme is designed to equip participants with practical skills, professional exposure, and workplace readiness in a structured and supportive environment. Applications close on 16 January 2026, and only candidates who ensure timely submission to Human Resources will be considered.

Programme Purpose and Overview

The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Trainee Programme is aimed at empowering technically inclined youth by providing meaningful, hands-on workplace experience. Through this initiative, participants are given the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge acquired during their studies to actual industry tasks, thereby enhancing their employability and professional confidence.

Over the course of 12 months, learners are exposed to industry-specific operations, guided by experienced professionals, and supported through mentorship and structured learning interventions. The programme is especially valuable for students who are required by their institutions to complete workplace learning as part of their qualification.

Key Responsibilities and Learning Areas

Participants in the programme will be placed within relevant departments or work-streams where they will contribute to daily operations while developing critical workplace competencies.

Task Execution and Operational Support
Learners will assist with specific projects, perform routine operational duties under supervision, and support administrative functions such as documentation, record-keeping, and reporting. This exposure helps learners understand how large organisations like Transnet operate at a functional level.

Learning, Development, and Mentorship
A strong emphasis is placed on learning and growth. Participants will attend training sessions, workshops, and mentorship programmes designed to build both technical and professional skills. Shadowing experienced professionals allows learners to gain valuable insights into industry best practices and workplace expectations.

Communication and Collaboration
The programme encourages active interaction with internal teams, customers, and suppliers. Learners will provide updates on assigned tasks, assist with coordination activities, and serve as points of contact for basic queries, strengthening their communication and teamwork skills.

Research, Analysis, and Reporting
Participants may be involved in market research, data collection, and analysis to support business decisions. They will also assist in preparing reports and presentations using standard office tools, while contributing to process improvement initiatives where possible.

Compliance, Ethics, and Safety
Learners are expected to adhere strictly to Transnet’s policies, procedures, and safety regulations. Maintaining confidentiality, ethical conduct, and professional integrity forms a core part of the learning experience, preparing participants for long-term careers in regulated environments.

Eligibility and Requirements

To be considered for the programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen aged between 18 and 35
  • Have a Matric certificate
  • Have completed S4–S5 theoretical coursework in Electronics, Electrical (Heavy Current), or Mechanical Engineering
  • Provide proof of confirmation or an official letter from their institution
  • Submit certified copies of their Matric certificate, academic record, and ID
  • Have no bursary obligation with another organisation

Preference will be given to applicants residing in the Western Cape, with particular consideration for people with disabilities, in line with Transnet’s commitment to inclusive development.

Desired Competencies

Successful candidates should demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, basic computer literacy, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within a team. A willingness to learn, problem-solving ability, and a professional attitude are essential attributes for success in the programme.

A Strategic Step Towards a Technical Career

The Transnet Work Integrated Learner (Technical) Programme is more than a training opportunity—it is a strategic stepping stone into South Africa’s industrial and engineering sectors. By combining structured learning with practical exposure, the programme prepares participants to transition confidently into the workplace or further career opportunities.

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply early and ensure that all required documentation is submitted before the 16 January 2026 closing date. For aspiring technical professionals in the Western Cape, this programme represents a valuable opportunity to gain industry-relevant experience with one of South Africa’s most significant state-owned enterprises.
