About the Discovery Internship Programme

The Discovery Internship Programme was launched in 2006 as a structured initiative to support unemployed graduates who require workplace exposure. Over the years, the programme has positively impacted more than 480 graduates, with an impressive 71% average permanent placement rate after completion.

Interns are placed in real business environments for a 12-month period, where they receive on-the-job training, mentorship, and professional development. The programme is designed to equip graduates with practical skills, industry knowledge, and workplace confidence, preparing them to succeed in any demanding professional setting.

Key Purpose of the Group Life Internship

The Group Life Internship Programme is designed to provide hands-on operational exposure within the Group Life Operations team. Interns support key administrative and client service functions across multiple areas of the business, including underwriting, billing, claims, disability management, and back-office administration.

Through structured support and close supervision, interns develop a solid understanding of group life insurance processes while contributing to accuracy, efficiency, and service excellence.

Areas of Responsibility

Interns selected for the programme will assist with a broad range of operational activities, which may include:

  • Preparing broker reports using internal systems such as SFE and Compass
  • Indexing and managing documentation accurately on the relevant systems
  • Coordinating medical requirement requests for members exceeding free cover limits
  • Loading member details and supporting onboarding processes
  • Liaising with the Smart Service team to manage nurse-completed medical documentation
  • Managing billing portfolios, including debit order and EFT schemes
  • Monitoring work pools and ensuring tasks are completed within agreed Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
  • Assisting with the assessment of new claims under the supervision of senior specialists
  • Supporting claims-related communications, including reminders for pending Global Education Protector (GEP) claims
  • Assisting with reporting and data compilation related to GEP claims

This exposure provides interns with a well-rounded understanding of operational workflows within a regulated financial services environment.

Education and Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the Discovery Internship Programme – Group Life, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Matric / Grade 12 qualification (essential)
  • BCom Degree or Honours qualification
  • No prior work experience (essential)
  • No previous internship or graduate programme participation in any industry or government institution
  • Aged between 18 and 30 years
  • South African citizen by birth or naturalisation before 27 April 1994

This programme is specifically targeted at unemployed youth who are seeking their first opportunity to gain professional work experience.
