MQA IT Internships 2026: Two-Year Paid Opportunity

The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) invites unemployed South African graduates to apply for a two-year paid IT Internship. Gain hands-on experience in IT support, systems administration, and project coordination with a monthly stipend of R9,306.18. Apply before 26 January 2026.

MQA IT Internship Programme 2026: Building the Next Generation of Technology Professionals

South Africa’s digital transformation across industries continues to accelerate, increasing the demand for skilled IT professionals who can support modern infrastructure, data systems, and enterprise applications. Recognizing this growing need, the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) has opened applications for its Information Technology Internship Programme, a two-year paid opportunity designed to equip young graduates with practical workplace experience in a dynamic public-sector environment.

This internship forms part of MQA’s broader mandate to advance skills development in the mining and minerals sector. Operating under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the MQA is a Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) established through the Skills Development Act of 1998. Its mission is to strengthen workforce capacity across mining-related industries, ranging from coal, gold, platinum, and diamond mining to cement production, mineral processing, and jewellery manufacturing.

Through initiatives such as this IT Internship Programme, the MQA continues to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world workplace requirements, offering unemployed graduates a structured pathway into the technology profession.

About the IT Internship Opportunity

The MQA is inviting South African citizens who are currently unemployed and have not previously participated in an internship programme to apply for placement within its Information Technology Unit. Successful candidates will be appointed on a 24-month fixed-term internship contract, providing sustained exposure to professional IT operations within a national organization.

Interns will report directly to the Senior Manager: Information Technology, gaining mentorship and guidance while developing technical, administrative, and problem-solving skills. With a monthly stipend of R9,306.18, this programme offers not only valuable work experience but also financial support for participants as they build their careers.

Key Areas of Exposure and Responsibilities

The IT Intern will become an integral part of MQA’s technology support environment, participating in a broad range of technical and administrative duties. These responsibilities are designed to provide comprehensive exposure to modern IT infrastructure and user support functions.

Interns will assist with the maintenance of IT infrastructure in a Microsoft Windows environment, supporting capacity management, security protocols, and network administration. They will gain hands-on experience in cloud-based systems and Microsoft SQL database administration, contributing to the stability and efficiency of MQA’s information systems.

A significant component of the role involves first-line end-user support, where interns will respond to IT-related enquiries through the ICT Service Desk. Tasks include setting up new workstations, installing software, configuring email accounts, managing antivirus systems, resetting passwords, and troubleshooting application-related issues.

Additional responsibilities include network and printer troubleshooting, IT security administration such as backup and recovery processes, firewall monitoring, and vulnerability management. Interns will also provide remote assistance to regional office users, reinforcing communication and technical support skills in a multi-location environment.

Beyond technical operations, the programme offers exposure to business analysis and project coordination, particularly within MQA’s ongoing IMIS/ERP Project. This provides valuable insight into enterprise system implementation and digital transformation initiatives within a government institution.

Minimum Requirements and Academic Background

To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • A Grade 12 / Matric Certificate
  • A National Diploma in Information Technology or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 6

Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or an equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification will have an added advantage, though it is not a strict requirement. The programme is structured to accommodate both diploma and degree graduates, provided they demonstrate commitment and readiness to learn.

Desired Competencies and Personal Attributes

The MQA seeks candidates who are not only academically qualified but also display the interpersonal and professional competencies necessary for workplace success. Ideal applicants should have:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A proactive and self-motivated attitude
  • The ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving capability
  • An understanding of education, training, and legislative frameworks within the public sector

These attributes ensure that interns can integrate effectively into a professional team environment while delivering quality support to internal stakeholders.

Application Process and Closing Date

Interested candidates are required to submit:

  • A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae
  • Certified copies of academic qualifications
  • Valid proof of identification

Applications must be submitted online via www.cvspaces.co.za.

The closing date for applications is 26 January 2026. Late applications will not be considered.

Applicants are encouraged to apply early, as this programme attracts significant interest from graduates seeking government-sector IT experience.

Selection and Employment Conditions

The Mining Qualifications Authority is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and all appointments will align with its Employment Equity Plan. Recommended candidates will be required to undergo police clearance and qualification verification as part of the final selection process.

If applicants do not receive feedback within four weeks after the closing date, they should consider their application unsuccessful. The MQA also reserves the right not to make an appointment.

Why This Internship Matters

For young South African graduates, securing relevant workplace experience remains one of the biggest challenges when entering the job market. The MQA IT Internship Programme addresses this challenge directly by offering structured, mentored, and practical exposure within a reputable national institution.

Participants will graduate from the programme with enhanced technical proficiency, professional confidence, and a portfolio of real-world experience in IT infrastructure support, database administration, security management, and enterprise systems. These competencies are highly transferable across both public and private sectors, significantly improving future employability.

Moreover, interns will contribute to the broader goal of strengthening South Africa’s mining and minerals sector through reliable, secure, and efficient information systems. In doing so, they become part of a national initiative that links technology, education, and economic development.

Final Thoughts

The MQA IT Internship Programme is more than a training opportunity—it is a career-launching platform for ambitious graduates eager to establish themselves in the information technology field. With a competitive monthly stipend, comprehensive exposure to IT operations, and a two-year structured learning journey, this programme offers an exceptional opportunity to gain experience, grow professionally, and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s skills development agenda.

Aspiring IT professionals are encouraged to seize this opportunity and take the first decisive step toward a rewarding career in technology.
