The International Climate Protection Fellowship supports emerging leaders and postdoctoral researchers from non-European developing and transition countries to pursue climate-focused research projects in Germany, fostering international cooperation and sustainable solutions.
Overview of the Fellowship
The International Climate Protection Fellowship is a highly regarded programme administered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. It is designed to support prospective leaders and postdoctoral researchers from non-European developing and transition countries who are actively engaged in climate protection or climate-relevant resource conservation. By enabling long-term research stays in Germany, the fellowship strengthens international cooperation and promotes innovative, practical, and scientific responses to global climate challenges.
The programme is rooted in the belief that sustainable climate solutions require global collaboration. Fellows are not only supported as researchers or practitioners, but also recognised as future decision-makers and multipliers who will apply their expertise in their countries of origin and beyond.
Target Group and Eligibility
The fellowship is open to two main groups: prospective leaders working practically in climate-related fields and postdoctoral researchers pursuing academic careers. Applicants must be citizens of non-European developing or transition countries and must have predominantly lived and worked in their country of origin.
All applicants are expected to demonstrate strong engagement with climate change issues, initial leadership experience, and excellent command of English and/or German. The programme places great importance on diversity and inclusion, welcoming applications regardless of gender, ethnic or cultural background, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or worldview. Female applicants and members of underrepresented groups are expressly encouraged to apply.
Fellowship Pathways
Prospective Leaders Working Practically
Prospective leaders undertake a one-year research project in Germany. They must have completed their first academic degree within the last twelve years and possess relevant professional experience in climate protection or climate-relevant resource conservation. This includes at least 24 months of practical experience after the first degree, or alternatively a Master’s degree combined with at least 12 months of relevant professional experience.
This pathway is particularly suited to professionals working in policy, administration, civil society, or applied research who aim to strengthen the practical impact of climate initiatives in their home countries.
Postdoctoral Researchers
Postdoctoral fellows may conduct academic research in Germany for a period of 12 to 24 months. In addition to meeting the general eligibility criteria, applicants must hold a doctorate closely related to climate protection or climate-relevant resource conservation. The doctorate must have been awarded no more than four years prior to the application deadline, or be completed by 31 August of the selection year. A strong publication record in internationally reviewed journals or publishing houses is also required.
Research Focus Areas
All fellowship projects must address pressing climate-related challenges. Priority areas include combating climate change, developing adaptation strategies, preserving ecosystems and biodiversity, and promoting the sustainable use of seas and oceans. Projects related to sustainable resource management, resource-efficient consumption, and sustainable urban development are also welcomed.
The programme values interdisciplinary approaches and research that demonstrates clear relevance for practical application, particularly in the fellow’s country of origin.
Funding and Sponsorship
Each year, up to 15 fellowships are awarded to prospective leaders and up to five to postdoctoral researchers. The programme is funded through the International Climate Initiative (IKI), which has been overseen by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action since 2022. It operates in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection and the Federal Foreign Office.
Prospective leaders receive a monthly fellowship amount ranging from €2,500 to €3,000, depending on qualifications and career level. Postdoctoral researchers receive a monthly stipend of €3,000. Additional financial support is available for travel expenses, accompanying partners and children, private health insurance, and German language courses.
Host institutions in Germany receive a monthly allowance for research costs, enabling them to provide an appropriate research environment for fellows.
Professional Development and Networking
A key strength of the International Climate Protection Fellowship is its comprehensive support beyond research funding. Fellows participate in a three-week introductory programme that brings together climate protection fellows from around the world. This includes visits to research institutions and businesses, as well as cultural events that foster mutual understanding and professional exchange.
The Humboldt Foundation also offers extensive alumni support, enabling fellows to maintain long-term professional relationships with German partners throughout their careers. This sustained network plays a crucial role in advancing international climate cooperation.
Application Process
Applicants must first identify an appropriate host institution in Germany and jointly develop a research project. Applications are submitted online via the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s website and must include a completed application form, a detailed research proposal with a communication strategy, and a letter of motivation.
Two recent letters of recommendation are required, along with a comprehensive host statement and mentoring agreement from the German host institution. Applications are only considered complete once all required documents have been submitted.
The application deadline for the current call is 10 February 2026. Applicants are encouraged to begin preparations early, particularly when selecting hosts and arranging recommendation letters.
Long-Term Impact
The International Climate Protection Fellowship plays a vital role in building global capacity for climate action. By supporting talented individuals and fostering enduring international partnerships, the programme contributes to sustainable development, informed policymaking, and effective climate protection worldwide. Through its emphasis on leadership, collaboration, and inclusivity, the fellowship helps shape a global network of professionals committed to addressing one of the most urgent challenges of our time.
