The Purpose of the Fellowship

Fellowship Structure and Benefits
Duration & Stipend
- Start Date: June 1, 2026
- End Date: May 30, 2027
- Stipend: $10,000 per month for 12 months
The fellowship is fully remote, with two Wilson Center-funded trips to Washington, D.C.—one at the beginning and one at the end of the program.
Expectations and Responsibilities
Each fellow is expected to:
- Complete the proposed research project
- Present a Work in Progress session
- Attend colleagues’ presentations
- Engage deeply with policymakers
- Contribute to discussions, briefings, or public events
- Produce reports, op-eds, or other policy-relevant writings
- Participate in the broader community of scholars in Washington
To support this work, fellows receive access to the Wilson Center Library, Library of Congress, and numerous digital and university resources.
Eligibility Requirements
The program encourages applications from individuals in academia, government, civil society, and the nonprofit sector, provided they demonstrate exceptional expertise and a strong record of achievement. Eligibility requires:
Academic Applicants
- PhD completed
- At least one published book or monograph beyond the dissertation
Practitioners (Government, NGO, Policy Sector)
- Approx. 10+ years of relevant experience
- Clear track record of influence, publication, or leadership
Additional requirements include:
- English proficiency
- No need for institutional affiliation
- Previous Wilson Center fellows may apply, depending on conditions
Applicants must also describe how they will balance other responsibilities while contributing actively to the Center’s mission.
Project Proposal Requirements
To qualify, project proposals must meet the following criteria:
- Nonpartisan
- Policy-relevant, addressing U.S. or global foreign policy challenges
- Must align with one of the Wilson Center’s pillars:
- Strategic competition
- Economic statecraft
- Technology & innovation
- Regional studies
Acceptable project outputs include:
- A book manuscript
- Long-form articles
- A policy briefing series
- Policy reports
Projects cannot include dissertation rewrites, artistic productions, anthologies, translations, or memoirs.
Selection Criteria
Applications go through a multi-stage review process assessed by both internal and external experts. Selection is based on:
- Importance and originality of the proposed research

- Clarity and rigor of the proposal
- Demonstrated capability to complete the project
