UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) is hiring a Social Media Intern focused on TikTok content production to support its global digital communications work. This full-time internship runs for 24 weeks and can be completed in New York or remotely. The role is designed for students or recent graduates who are confident on camera, fluent in TikTok culture, and interested in using short-form video to communicate global development issues.

The internship is available during one of two periods:

  • 1 March 2026 – 16 August 2026, or
  • 1 September 2026 – 14 February 2027

The application deadline is 12 January 2026 (23:59 EST).

Role Overview

The Social Media Intern will work with UNFPA Headquarters’ Digital Communications Team under the supervision of the Social Media Specialist. The intern’s primary responsibility is to produce on-camera, mobile-first TikTok videos that align with UNFPA’s campaigns, priorities, and brand standards.

This role is hands-on and creative. The intern is expected to appear on camera, film using a smartphone, edit short-form videos, and adapt content to TikTok trends and formats. The position supports UNFPA’s efforts to grow its reach and engagement with youth and digital-first audiences.


Key Responsibilities

The Social Media Intern will:

  • Film and feature in on-camera TikTok videos using a mobile phone
  • Contribute ideas, scripts, and storyboards for TikTok content
  • Track TikTok trends, challenges, formats, and audio to identify content opportunities
  • Edit short-form videos using mobile or desktop editing tools
  • Write captions, on-screen text, and overlays that follow UNFPA’s tone, brand, and accessibility guidelines
  • Support the planning and upkeep of a TikTok content calendar, including international days and priority moments
  • Coordinate with programme and communications teams to gather information and stories
  • Assist with publishing, scheduling, and optimizing TikTok posts
  • Support day-to-day social media activities across UNFPA’s global accounts
  • Carry out additional tasks as assigned by the Social Media Team

Education Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following at the time of application:

  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree (Master’s or higher)
  • Be in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree
  • Have graduated within the past year
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme

Experience and Skills

The ideal candidate has:

  • Experience creating TikTok or mobile video content (personal or professional)
  • Confidence appearing on camera
  • Strong understanding of TikTok culture, trends, and video formats
  • Basic video editing skills (mobile or desktop)
  • Strong storytelling and creative skills
  • Excellent written and spoken English (other UN languages are an asset)
  • Ability to meet deadlines, collaborate, and respond to feedback
  • Clear alignment with UNFPA’s mission, values, and safeguarding standards

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the internship, the intern will have:

  • Practical experience in UN digital communications and social media strategy
  • Understanding of UNFPA’s mandate, structure, and messaging
  • Experience producing platform-specific social media content
  • Skills in inclusive and audience-focused communication
  • Exposure to collaborative content production and basic project management

A learning-focused work plan and regular check-ins will support professional development throughout the internship.


Compensation and Conditions

  • This is an unpaid internship
  • A stipend is provided to cover basic daily expenses if the intern is not financially supported by another institution
  • The stipend amount depends on the intern’s location
  • Interns must cover accommodation, travel, and personal expenses
  • Medical insurance is required for the full internship period and must be arranged independently

UNFPA does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
