Apply for Stellenbosch Municipality Graduate Internship Opportunities 2026

Stellenbosch Municipality invites graduates to apply for three Graduate Internship positions in Integrated Human Settlements, offering monthly stipends and hands-on public sector experience.

Stellenbosch Municipality has announced an exciting Graduate Internship Opportunity for suitably qualified graduates interested in contributing to local government and community development. The municipality is inviting applications for three (3) Graduate Intern positions within its Department of Integrated Human Settlements, offered on a one-year contract.

This internship programme is designed to provide graduates with meaningful workplace exposure while supporting the municipality’s mandate to deliver sustainable, inclusive, and well-planned human settlements.

Purpose of the Graduate Internship Programme

The Graduate Internship Programme aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical professional experience. By placing graduates within the Integrated Human Settlements Department, Stellenbosch Municipality provides young professionals with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world development challenges.

The programme also supports the development of critical skills in planning, project coordination, and development management—skills that are essential for effective service delivery and long-term spatial transformation.

Department: Integrated Human Settlements

The Integrated Human Settlements Department plays a key role in planning, coordinating, and implementing housing and settlement development initiatives within the municipality. Its work focuses on creating inclusive, well-located, and sustainable communities that support social and economic development.

Graduate interns placed in this department will gain exposure to municipal planning processes, housing programmes, infrastructure coordination, and development management practices, while working alongside experienced professionals in the public sector.

Internship Details and Stipend

The internship is offered on a fixed-term contract of one year, with a monthly stipend structured according to the intern’s highest qualification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree: R6,500 per month
  • Honours Degree: R8,000 per month
  • Master’s Degree: R9,000 per month

The stipend is intended to support graduates while they gain valuable on-the-job experience and build their professional portfolios.

Fields of Study Considered

Graduates from a range of development- and planning-related disciplines are encouraged to apply. Eligible fields of study include:

  • Development Planning
  • Town and Regional Planning
  • Engineering
  • Human Settlements
  • Construction Management
  • Project Management
  • Development Studies
  • Any other related qualification relevant to Development Planning, Development Management, or Integrated Human Settlements

This broad eligibility reflects the multidisciplinary nature of human settlements work, which requires collaboration across technical, social, and management disciplines.

Who Should Apply

The opportunity is ideal for graduates who are:

  • Passionate about urban development, housing, and community upliftment
  • Interested in gaining experience within local government
  • Eager to develop practical skills in planning, project coordination, and development management
  • Motivated, committed, and willing to learn in a structured professional environment

While the internship is suitable for recent graduates, applicants with a strong academic background and a clear interest in public sector development will be best positioned to benefit from the programme.

Interested candidates must submit a complete application package, which includes:

  • A covering letter expressing interest in the internship
  • A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV)
