Understanding the Accelerate Programme
The Accelerate Programme is a long-term youth development initiative that spans three years, focusing on either Hospitality Management or Professional Cookery. Its purpose is to build a strong foundation for a successful career in hospitality by combining practical experience with formal academic learning.
Before entering the three-year programme, candidates are required to complete an Orientation year. This year of practical hotel work allows participants to gain realistic insight into the industry and assess their suitability and commitment before applying for the full Accelerate programme.
Candidates who complete their Orientation year at a Marriott-affiliated hotel are referred to as Orientation Trainees. While successful completion of this year is a key requirement, it does not guarantee automatic acceptance into the three-year programme. Orientation Trainees must formally apply for first-year intake towards the end of their Orientation year and are assessed on performance and suitability.
What Orientation Trainees Do
During the Orientation year, Hospitality Management Trainees rotate through different hotel departments, gaining exposure to front office operations, food and beverage services, rooms division, and back-of-house functions. Professional Cookery Trainees, on the other hand, work across all sections of the hotel kitchen, learning how each area contributes to overall kitchen and food service operations.
Orientation Trainees are expected to uphold Marriott International’s high professional standards. This includes following company policies and procedures, maintaining professional appearance, protecting company assets, and safeguarding confidential information. Trainees are also trained to deliver exceptional guest service by welcoming guests warmly, anticipating their needs, and communicating clearly and professionally.
The role requires adaptability, teamwork, and physical stamina, as trainees may work varied shifts and perform duties that involve standing, walking, and light lifting.

To be considered for the Marriott International Youth Trainee Programmes, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a South African citizen by birth

What Marriott Offers Trainees
Participants in the Accelerate programme benefit from a professional and supportive working environment, with opportunities to learn directly from experienced hospitality professionals. Trainees become part of the largest hotel company in the world, gaining access to long-term career opportunities within Marriott International.
Additional benefits include personal coaching, structured training, and access to Marriott’s Take Care programme, which focuses on employee wellbeing through health, wellness, and engagement activities throughout the year.
Progression Into the Three-Year Programme
Those accepted into the three-year In-Service Trainee Programme after completing Orientation are immersed in Marriott’s culture and business operations. Trainees are placed at different Marriott hotels across South Africa each year to gain exposure to various hotel types, locations, and management styles.
Each year focuses on specific areas of the business. Hospitality Management trainees progress through food and beverage operations, rooms division, and management functions, while Professional Cookery trainees advance from cold food preparation to hot kitchen operations and full kitchen management exposure.
Formal learning is provided through hotel or culinary school study-release periods, short courses, and online eLearning. All training-related costs are covered by the company.
Employment After Graduation
Graduates are required to take up employment with Marriott International for one year after completing the programme. Marriott actively supports graduates in securing suitable full-time and permanent roles, reinforcing its commitment to long-term career development.
A Gateway to a Global Career
The Marriott International Youth Trainee Programmes for 2026 offer young South Africans a rare opportunity to gain world-class hospitality training while building a career with a globally respected brand.
