International Climate Protection Fellowship 2026: A Global Opportunity for Emerging Climate Leaders

The International Climate Protection Fellowship 2026 offers prospective leaders and postdoctoral researchers from developing and transition countries a funded 12–24 month research opportunity in Germany focused on climate action, sustainability, and resource conservation.

International Climate Protection Fellowship 2026: Empowering the Next Generation of Climate Leaders

As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, the need for skilled, globally connected climate leaders has never been greater. In response to this urgent challenge, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is inviting applications for the International Climate Protection Fellowship 2026, a prestigious and fully funded opportunity designed for prospective leaders and postdoctoral researchers from non-European developing and transition countries.

This fellowship supports individuals who are actively engaged—academically or practically—in climate protection or climate-relevant resource conservation. Through long-term research placements in Germany, fellows gain the chance to deepen their expertise, build international networks, and contribute meaningfully to global climate solutions.

About the Fellowship

The International Climate Protection Fellowship is funded through Germany’s International Climate Initiative (IKI), administered by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV) and the Federal Foreign Office. Each year, the programme awards up to 15 fellowships for prospective leaders working practically and five fellowships for postdoctoral researchers.

Depending on the applicant’s career stage, the fellowship supports either:

  • A 12-month research project in Germany for prospective leaders, or
  • A 12–24 month long-term academic research project for postdoctoral scholars.

Research projects must focus on key climate priorities, including:

  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Ecosystem and biodiversity conservation
  • Sustainable use of oceans and marine resources
  • Resource-efficient consumption and production
  • Sustainable urban development

A Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

The Humboldt Foundation places strong emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Applications are welcomed regardless of ethnicity, gender identity, age, disability, religion, or sexual orientation. Female applicants and individuals from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply, reflecting the programme’s commitment to balanced global representation in climate leadership.

Fellowship Benefits and Sponsorship

Successful fellows receive comprehensive financial and professional support to ensure they can fully focus on their research and professional development. Benefits include:

  • Monthly fellowship allowance:
    • €2,500–€3,000 for prospective leaders (depending on qualifications and experience)
    • €3,000 for postdoctoral researchers
  • Additional financial support for:
    • Travel expenses
    • Accompanying family members
    • Full private health insurance
    • German language courses
  • A three-week introductory programme in Germany, including site visits to research institutions, businesses, and cultural organisations
  • Dedicated mentoring and individualised support throughout the fellowship
  • Long-term alumni sponsorship, enabling continued collaboration with German partners well beyond the fellowship period

Host institutions in Germany also receive research allowances to support project costs, ensuring a mutually beneficial collaboration.

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship targets future decision-makers and knowledge multipliers who aim to address climate challenges through international cooperation. Applicants must:

  • Be citizens of a non-European developing or transition country and primarily live and work there
  • Demonstrate active engagement in climate protection or climate-related resource conservation
  • Possess strong leadership potential and relevant professional experience
  • Have very good proficiency in English and/or German

Additional Criteria

Prospective Leaders Working Practically:
Applicants must have completed their first university degree within the past 12 years and have at least 24 months of relevant professional experience in climate-related fields, or alternatively hold a Master’s degree with at least 12 months of relevant experience.

Postdoctoral Researchers:
Applicants must hold a doctorate related to climate protection or resource conservation, awarded no more than four years prior to the application deadline (or to be completed by 31 August of the selection year), and demonstrate a strong publication record in internationally reviewed journals.

Application Process and Timeline

Applicants are required to independently identify and agree on a research project with a suitable host institution in Germany before applying. Applications are submitted online via the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s portal.

Required documents include:

  • Completed application form with motivation letter and detailed research proposal
  • Two recent letters of recommendation
  • A host’s statement and mentoring agreement from the German host institution

The application deadline is 10 February 2026. Candidates are encouraged to begin preparations early, particularly in securing a host and references.

Building Global Climate Impact

Beyond funding research, the International Climate Protection Fellowship is designed to foster long-term international collaboration. Fellows join a global network of climate professionals who continue to exchange knowledge, influence policy, and implement climate solutions in their home countries and beyond.

By supporting emerging leaders and researchers at critical stages in their careers, the fellowship plays a vital role in strengthening global capacity to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.

For climate professionals seeking to expand their impact on an international stage, the International Climate Protection Fellowship 2026 represents a rare and powerful opportunity to turn expertise into lasting global action.
