Green Ambassadors (Generation GX) is a structured 3-month GX Africa program for African students, focused on AI for climate, green skills development, and inclusive climate outreach.
The Green Ambassadors (Generation GX) program is a structured, three-month youth leadership and skills-building initiative created by GX Africa to equip African students with practical climate knowledge, green skills, and digital tools. Designed specifically for undergraduates in universities, colleges, and TVET institutions, the program prepares young people to actively participate in Africa’s green transition while building career-relevant experience.
Unlike general climate awareness initiatives, Green Ambassadors is a clearly defined program with set learning challenges, outreach targets, and skills outcomes. Participants are not passive learners; they are trained, assessed, and supported to apply what they learn in real-world contexts.
Program Purpose and Focus
The core goal of the Green Ambassadors (Generation GX) program is to build a pipeline of climate-literate, digitally skilled African youth who can translate climate knowledge into accessible content, peer learning, and community engagement.
The program focuses on three specific areas:
- Climate policy understanding and simplification
- Green skills development and digital learning
- Inclusive climate outreach and youth network building
By the end of the three months, ambassadors are expected to demonstrate clear learning outcomes, documented work, and measurable outreach within their communities and online networks.
Program Structure and Duration
The program runs for three months, with a time commitment of approximately three hours per week. All activities are conducted online, making the program accessible to students across Africa regardless of location.
Each month focuses on a defined challenge, with clear deliverables and guidance from the GX Africa team. Ambassadors work independently while also contributing to a shared community of peers across different African countries.
Core Program Components
1. AI for Climate Learning Challenge
In the first phase of the program, ambassadors participate in the AI for Climate Learning Challenge. During this challenge, participants analyze their national or local government’s climate policies, strategies, or commitments.
Using AI tools, ambassadors are required to:
- Break down complex climate policy documents
- Translate technical language into youth-friendly explanations
- Produce simplified content such as summaries, posts, or visual explainers
The objective is to improve climate policy literacy among young people and demonstrate how AI can be responsibly used to support climate education and civic engagement.
2. Green Skills Glow-Up Challenge
The second phase focuses on green skills acquisition. Ambassadors must complete at least one free climate or sustainability-related course from the GX Africa Learning Lab.
After completing the course, each ambassador is required to:
- Share key learnings publicly on social media
- Explain how the acquired skill applies to climate action or sustainability careers
- Encourage peers to enroll in green learning opportunities
This challenge ensures that participants not only gain knowledge but also practice digital communication, peer education, and personal branding around sustainability.
3. 10×10 Climate Outreach Challenge
The final phase of the program is centered on network growth and inclusion. Each ambassador is tasked with recruiting at least 10 new members into the GX Africa Network.
Priority is placed on reaching:
- Students in underrepresented institutions
- Young people with limited access to climate and green opportunities
Ambassadors actively share GX Africa resources, including the Opportunities Microsite, Climate AI News Aggregator, and Learning Lab, ensuring wider access to climate information and opportunities across different communities.
Eligibility and Target Participants
The Green Ambassadors program is specifically designed for:
- Undergraduate students in universities, colleges, or TVET institutions
- Young people interested in climate action, sustainability, and emerging technologies
- Individuals comfortable using digital tools, social media, and online platforms
Strong communication skills in English are required, as program activities involve content creation and outreach. While prior experience in climate work is not mandatory, curiosity, reliability, and a willingness to learn are essential.
Additional strengths include experience with content creation, experimentation with AI tools, or active engagement in online communities.
What Participants Gain
Green Ambassadors receive tangible and career-relevant benefits, including:
- Structured training in climate change, green skills, and just transition concepts
- Practical experience using AI and digital tools for climate education
- Early access to GX Africa opportunities, platforms, and partner resources
- Training in Notion for digital organization and productivity
- A Certificate of Completion upon meeting program requirements
- Opportunities to build and showcase a personal green skills portfolio
High-performing ambassadors may also be considered for future roles within the GX Africa Team or seconded to external opportunities. Past participants have progressed to fellowships and externships with organizations such as the Green Institute and National Geographic.
Proven Impact
The first cohort of the Green Ambassadors program included 12 ambassadors from 8 African countries, demonstrating strong regional diversity and cross-border collaboration. Their work contributed directly to shaping GX Africa’s learning content, outreach strategies, and youth engagement model.
Application Process
Interested candidates are required to apply through GX Africa’s LinkedIn page. Applicants must like the page and send a direct message introducing themselves, clearly stating their interest in the program and what they can contribute as a Green Ambassador.
Shortlisted applicants are then invited to complete a formal sign-up form for final selection.
A Defined Pathway Into Climate Leadership
Green Ambassadors (Generation GX) is not a general volunteer role—it is a clearly structured, time-bound program with defined learning outcomes, deliverables, and progression pathways. By combining climate education, digital skills, and inclusive outreach, GX Africa is intentionally preparing African youth to participate meaningfully in the continent’s green economy and climate leadership space.
For students ready to build skills, contribute to climate solutions, and grow within a pan-African network, the Green Ambassadors program offers a focused and impactful entry point.
