Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) is offering 117 bursary opportunities through its Air Traffic Services Bursary Programme. Learn about eligibility, streams, training, and how to apply before 31 January 2026.
Air Traffic Services (ATS) Bursary Programme 2026
Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), a key entity in South Africa’s aviation and aerospace sector, has opened applications for its Air Traffic Services (ATS) Bursary Programme for the 2026 intake. This opportunity is aimed at unemployed South African youth who aspire to build a professional career in aviation, particularly in air traffic management and related operational fields.
With a total of 117 bursary opportunities available, the programme represents one of the most comprehensive entry points into the aviation industry for matriculants and young graduates with no prior work experience. Applications are currently open and will close on 31 January 2026.
About Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS)
ATNS is responsible for the safe, orderly, and efficient management of air traffic within South Africa’s airspace, as well as parts of the broader African region. The organisation plays a critical role in ensuring aviation safety and supporting economic growth through reliable air navigation services.
Through its bursary and training programmes, ATNS invests in developing future aviation professionals who can meet the growing demands of the industry while upholding global safety and operational standards.
Overview of the ATS Bursary Programme
The Air Traffic Services Bursary Programme is a fixed-term training contract designed to provide extensive theoretical and practical training over a specified period. Successful candidates, referred to as bursars, will complete their studies at the Aviation Training Academy in Bonaero Park, Gauteng.
ATNS plans to host four bursary intakes during the financial year, ensuring a steady pipeline of trained professionals. Upon completion of training, the placement of successful trainees will be determined by the operational requirements of the organisation, which may involve relocation to different parts of the country.
Available Bursary Streams
The ATS Bursary Programme offers multiple specialised streams, allowing candidates to pursue different career paths within air traffic services. These include:
- Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO)
Responsible for managing aircraft movements to ensure safe and efficient air traffic flow. - Aeronautical Information Management Officer (AIMO)
Focuses on the management and dissemination of critical aeronautical information used by pilots and aviation stakeholders. - Target Generating Officer (TGO)
Supports surveillance systems by managing and generating radar targets for operational use. - Airport Management Centre (AMC) Liaison Officer
Acts as a communication link between airport operations and air traffic services. - Simulator Support Officer (SSO)
Provides technical and operational support for air traffic control simulators used in training environments.
Each stream offers specialised training aligned with international aviation standards and ATNS operational needs.
Training and Exposure
Bursars accepted into the programme will receive extensive training and hands-on exposure to various aspects of air traffic management. The curriculum is structured to equip trainees with both technical knowledge and practical skills required in real-world aviation operations.
Training at the Aviation Training Academy includes classroom instruction, simulator-based learning, and continuous assessment to ensure competency and readiness for operational environments.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the ATS Bursary Programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A Matric certificate with passes in:
- Pure Mathematics (Level 4 or higher; HG D or SG C or above)
- English (Level 4 or higher; HG D or SG C or above)
- Be a South African citizen with a valid Identity Document
- Be unemployed at the time of application
- Be willing to relocate anywhere in South Africa if required

Location, Contract, and Remuneration
The programme is based in Kempton Park, with training conducted in Bonaero Park, Gauteng. It is offered on a fixed-term contract, and remuneration is described as market-related, reflecting the investment ATNS makes in developing skilled aviation professionals.
Why This Opportunity Matters
The ATS Bursary Programme is more than just financial support—it is a structured pathway into a highly specialised and globally relevant industry. Aviation careers, particularly in air traffic services, offer long-term professional growth, stability, and the opportunity to contribute directly to national and international aviation safety.
For young South Africans with strong mathematical and communication skills, this programme provides access to world-class training that would otherwise be difficult to obtain.
Application Deadline
Interested candidates must submit their applications online before 31 January 2026. Given the competitive nature of the programme and the limited number of bursary positions, early and complete applications are strongly encouraged.
The Air Traffic Services Bursary Programme stands as a significant opportunity for South African youth to enter the aviation and aerospace sector. Through structured training, professional mentorship, and national placement opportunities, ATNS continues to build the next generation of aviation professionals who will help shape the future of air traffic management in South Africa and beyond.
