Youth Futures Training & Mentorship in Participatory Action Research Methods
The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP), in partnership with CAP Youth Empowerment Institute, has opened applications for its highly anticipated Youth Futures Training and Mentorship in Participatory Action Research (PAR). This initiative forms part of the broader Youth Futures Policy Research Project, a transformative programme dedicated to strengthening youth-led research, policy engagement, and innovation across Africa.
This opportunity is designed for individuals passionate about shaping meaningful work opportunities and advancing policy solutions that support dignified livelihoods for young people across the continent.
About the Youth Futures Policy Research Project
The Youth Futures Policy Research Project is a three-year, multi-country initiative supported by the Mastercard Foundation. It is implemented across Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, and Uganda, with a bold and clear mission:
to improve youth employment outcomes by transforming the policies and regulatory systems that shape access to dignified work.
The project seeks to bridge the long-standing gaps between policy intent and implementation, using research-driven insights to influence decision-making and strengthen the enabling environment for youth economic empowerment.
Building New Voices in Policy Research
AFIDEP and CAP Youth Empowerment Institute created the Youth Futures training programme to cultivate a new generation of community-rooted researchers.
Participants will gain exposure to core research frameworks used in the policy project, including:
Participatory Action Research (PAR)
A collaborative approach that positions community members as co-researchers in identifying problems and co-creating solutions.
Political Economy Analysis (PEA)
A method that helps researchers understand the power structures, incentives, and institutions that shape policy and development outcomes.
Intersectionality
A lens that recognises how overlapping identities and social conditions create unique experiences and challenges for different population groups.
Together, these tools prepare participants to investigate real issues, challenge systemic barriers, and create evidence-based recommendations grounded in lived experiences.
Programme Structure: A Hybrid Learning Experience
The three-month programme combines hands-on learning, virtual engagement, and personalised mentorship. It includes:
1. In-Person Boot Camp (2 Days)
Participants begin with a dynamic, two-day workshop covering:
- Research fundamentals
- Participatory and inclusive methodologies
- Contextual analysis and problem identification
This boot camp serves as both an academic grounding and a collaborative learning experience.
2. Virtual Learning Labs
Three online sessions deepen participants’ understanding of research application. These labs guide learners through:
- Refining research problems
- Justifying research approaches
- Applying participatory tools
- Structuring a community-based research plan
3. Mentorship and Mini-PAR Project (3 Months)
Under the support of experienced researchers, participants will design and implement a mini-research initiative in their own communities or countries.
This practical component ensures that learning translates into tangible action, real-world insights, and community-level impact.
