The Team and Purpose
The Financial Accounting and Control team is the backbone of Save the Children’s financial management system. Its purpose is to establish and maintain a robust financial control framework, ensuring that all financial accounting processes meet statutory requirements, donor regulations, and international accounting standards. This team’s work supports the organization’s overall mission by safeguarding financial integrity, fostering transparency, and managing risks across the global operations.
The Role: Leading Financial Oversight and Compliance
As Global Financial Controller, the successful candidate will be at the heart of the organization’s financial management, responsible for overseeing statutory financial reporting, managing the annual audit process, and ensuring the organization’s financial controls are effective and compliant across all regions. This role is vital in strengthening Save the Children’s organizational integrity, managing financial risks, and maintaining stakeholder confidence.
The Controller will lead a team of 16 finance professionals, providing inspiring leadership and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development. Working closely with the CFO, the role involves managing a budget of approximately $1.8 million and ensuring the organization’s financial systems and processes support strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Team Development: Inspire and motivate the global finance team, building professional skills and promoting a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
- Financial Control Framework: Design and implement effective financial control policies and processes, ensuring compliance with UK, Swiss, and other jurisdictional accounting standards.
- Financial Reporting & Audit: Oversee the preparation of all financial statements, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance. Lead the annual external audit process, working with auditors like KPMG, and support country offices in managing their numerous donor and statutory audits.
- System & Tax Strategy: Collaborate with the Transformation and IT departments to optimize financial systems and support strategic projects. Establish and drive global tax compliance strategies, offering guidance to teams worldwide.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Provide insightful financial reporting and analysis to senior management and trustees, supporting strategic decision-making and risk management.
- Risk & Compliance: Monitor financial risks, ensure adherence to policies, and address audit findings swiftly and effectively.

- Financial Expertise: Deep understanding of charity SORP, statutory reporting, internal controls, and audit processes.
- Systems Savvy: Strong experience managing large-scale financial systems and implementing process improvements.
