UNESCO Hiring: Programme Assistant (Multiple Positions)

In line with its mission, UNESCO New Delhi is seeking a proactive and dedicated Programme Assistant to support its Natural Sciences Sector, specifically focusing on the “Women for Bees” initiative within Indian Biosphere Reserves. This position offers a unique chance to contribute to environmental conservation and gender empowerment through hands-on program support.
Position Overview
The Programme Assistant will operate under the authority of the Director of UNESCO New Delhi and directly report to the Chief of the Science Sector. The role is primarily based in New Delhi, with a contract duration of up to six months, from July 2025 to December 2025. This is a non-staff, Level 2 position open to external candidates who are eager to contribute to UNESCO’s environmental initiatives.
The selected candidate will be instrumental in coordinating activities, assisting with project implementation, and supporting communications related to the “Women for Bees” program—an innovative project aimed at empowering local women through eco-friendly beekeeping practices in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
Key Responsibilities
The Programme Assistant’s responsibilities encompass a broad range of operational and programmatic support functions:
- Program Support: Facilitate effective decision-making and ensure the smooth implementation of the Science Sector’s activities, especially the “Women for Bees” project.
- Project Coordination: Liaise regularly with local NGOs and stakeholders involved in the biosphere reserve, ensuring effective coordination and progress.
- Reporting & Communications: Assist in drafting reports, updates, and content for social media platforms to promote the project’s achievements and raise awareness.
- Event Support: Help organize celebrations for International Days and other official events, including arrangements and logistics.
- Operational Assistance: Support procurement processes by identifying cost-effective vendors, managing contracts, and assisting with travel arrangements in accordance with UNESCO policies.
- Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as needed to support the Science Sector’s activities and objectives.

Educational & Language Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, environmental sciences, or related fields is required.
- Proficiency in English, especially in drafting high-quality documents, is essential.
- Knowledge of Tamil and/or Malayalam is considered an asset but is not mandatory.
Desirable Experience
Candidates with prior experience working in a Biosphere Reserve or protected area, experience in organizing field activities, or stakeholder coordination will have an advantage. Previous work with UNESCO or similar UN agencies will also be viewed favorably.
Contract Details
This is a short-term contract of six months, with the possibility for extension depending on funding and performance. The position offers benefits including a monthly gross salary of approximately INR Rs 64,661, along with annual leave and sick leave entitlements.
