Remote Internship: UNDP is Hiring for a Research and Innovation Intern

In an era where diversity, inclusion, and innovative governance are more vital than ever, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) offers a unique internship opportunity for aspiring change-makers. The Research and Innovation Internship, based remotely, is designed to immerse young professionals in the critical world of global governance, policy development, and transformative initiatives—while fostering a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic work environment.

About the Internship

This full-time, six-month internship, posted in early June 2025, is hosted by UNDP’s Bureau for Policy and Programme Support, specifically within the Global Policy Centre for Governance (GPCG). It aims to support research and innovative approaches on frontier governance issues—such as accountability, inclusiveness, and new ways of governing—that are crucial for building peaceful, just, and inclusive societies worldwide.

A Mission Rooted in Values

At its core, UNDP champions principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, recognizing that a multiplicity of perspectives strengthens global development efforts. The organization actively encourages applications from individuals representing marginalized or underserved populations, aligning with its ‘leave no one behind’ philosophy. Strict policies against harassment, discrimination, and exploitation ensure a safe and respectful workspace for all.

Key Responsibilities and Opportunities

The intern will engage in a broad spectrum of meaningful activities, including:

  • Conducting literature reviews, analysis, and drafting reports on governance frontier issues.
  • Mapping governance trends and analyzing stakeholder landscapes to inform policy and program development.
  • Supporting the conceptualization and implementation of innovative initiatives and methods on governance topics.
  • Developing communication materials such as concept notes, proposals, presentations, and social media content to amplify UNDP’s governance work.
  • Assisting with the launch of reports and organizing public events to promote knowledge sharing.
  • Expanding GPCG’s network of research and knowledge partnerships, particularly in Nordic and Southern countries.
  • Participating in meetings, events, and engagements with project stakeholders, colleagues, and partners worldwide.
  • Performing additional tasks that support the Centre’s mission to promote inclusive governance.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The internship is tailored for individuals with a keen interest in global development and governance. Candidates should possess:

  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and a flexible mindset eager to learn.
  • Experience or interest in issues like accountability, inclusiveness, and effective governance.
  • Excellent communication skills, including editing, visual design, and social media content creation.
  • Knowledge of web publication tools and photo editing software is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the political and bureaucratic landscapes of Norway or the Global South is advantageous.
  • Prior work experience with international organizations, research institutions, or in countries of the Global South is highly desirable.

Educational and Language Requirements

Applicants should meet one of the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s degree (preferably in social sciences, data science, psychology, or related fields).
  • Enrolled in a postgraduate program (master’s or higher) in relevant disciplines.
  • Recently graduated (within one year) from such programs.
  • Enrolled in postgraduate professional traineeship programs incorporating this internship.

Fluency in English is mandatory; knowledge of additional languages, especially Norwegian or languages relevant to the Global South, is an asset.

Application Process and Conditions

Interested candidates are invited to submit a comprehensive application package, including an updated CV, contact details of references, and a brief statement explaining their motivation and suitability for the internship—all in a single file. The deadline for applications is June 22, 2025.

Selected interns will receive a monthly stipend, with other costs borne by the intern or sponsoring institutions. Importantly, this internship is designed to complement academic pursuits, and there is no guarantee of further employment with UNDP post-internship.

This opportunity offers young professionals a rare chance to contribute to transformative governance initiatives that influence policy, promote inclusion, and foster sustainable development worldwide.
