Internship Opportunity at UNFPA: Supporting Client Services and Outreach in New York

This part-time, 24-week internship is based in New York City and is designed to provide valuable insights into UN operations, project management, and program support, particularly focusing on youth engagement and professional development programs.

The Internship Role

Under the direct supervision of the HR Specialist in the Client Services and Outreach Branch, the intern will support various projects and initiatives aligned with UNFPA’s mission. The role involves a mixture of project management, communication, and outreach activities, focusing on strengthening the organization’s engagement with young professionals and partners.

Specifically, the intern will:

  • Assist in drafting recruitment documents for the Internship and Young Professional Program.
  • Create innovative communication materials, including presentations in PowerPoint and other media formats.
  • Participate actively as a facilitator and contributor during youth-focused programming initiatives.
  • Represent HR in Employee Resource Group sessions, fostering an inclusive and engaged organizational culture.
  • Support the organization of events, meetings, and outreach activities aimed at expanding UNFPA’s reach and impact.

A detailed work plan will be developed at the start of the internship, outlining specific achievements and learning objectives. Regular progress meetings will ensure a supportive environment for the intern’s professional growth.

Who Should Apply?

Candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program (such as a master’s or higher), or have recently graduated within the past year.
  • Have some experience working with development agencies, NGOs, or volunteer initiatives.
  • Be fluent in English; knowledge of additional languages is a plus.
  • Possess strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to work harmoniously with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Financial and Logistical Details

UNFPA does not provide a salary for interns. Participants are responsible for their own living expenses, travel, and accommodation. However, a modest stipend is provided to help cover daily expenses, depending on the duty station. Interns must also hold valid medical insurance for the duration of the internship, as UNFPA does not furnish insurance coverage.

This internship is in person at UNFPA’s office located at 605 3rd Ave., New York, NY, and requires a commitment of 50% part-time work.
