This internship is hosted within UNEP’s Regional Seas Branch, Ecosystems Division, and offers a flexible engagement period ranging from three to six months. The core goal of the Communications Unit at UNEP is to effectively communicate the organization’s mission, initiatives, and impacts to a diverse array of stakeholders. What Will the Intern Do?
Under the guidance of the Head of the Nairobi Convention, the intern will contribute significantly to the planning, creation, and dissemination of multimedia content centered on marine and coastal issues affecting the Western Indian Ocean. Specific responsibilities include:
- Assisting in the production and editing of photos and videos that highlight marine and coastal conservation efforts.
- Supporting the design of infographics and publicity materials for the Nairobi Convention’s contracting parties.
- Updating and maintaining content on the Nairobi Convention’s website, including news, events, and relevant documents.
- Developing and managing a content plan for the six-month period to ensure consistent and strategic communication.
- Crafting engaging social media posts, articles, and stories for platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn to increase visibility and stakeholder engagement.
- Collaborating with technical teams and communications officers to produce web articles and human-interest stories that resonate with a broad audience.
- Assisting in the dissemination of communication products across various media outlets, including online platforms and newspapers.
Who Can Apply?
Candidates should meet one of the following criteria at the time of application:
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate program (second university degree or higher), or
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final year of a bachelor’s degree program, or
- Hold a university degree in journalism, communications, media production, graphic design, information technology, or related fields.
In addition, applicants should demonstrate:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages for different audiences.
- Up-to-date knowledge of relevant multimedia tools and software for video, web, and graphic design.
- Creativity and the ability to produce visually compelling content that captures attention.
- Effective teamwork skills, including collaboration and sharing credit for successful projects.
- Fluency in English (both spoken and written); knowledge of French is considered an asset.
