Overview

The Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit (MDPU) of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) offers a traineeship opportunity for students and recent graduates interested in gaining hands-on experience within a multicultural environment while deepening their understanding of the United Nations system. This traineeship is designed to provide practical exposure to the development and delivery of diplomatic training programs, including orientation briefings, skills development workshops, and other capacity-building activities that benefit approximately 2,500 diplomats annually at the UN Headquarters and various global venues.

In addition to core diplomatic training, MDPU develops and implements programs at regional and country levels in collaboration with governments, universities, and international organizations. The unit also produces e-Learning courses, offers advisory services related to diplomatic curriculum development, and creates various training tools and publications. Furthermore, MDPU partners with universities worldwide to offer high-quality Master’s programs in areas related to Multilateral Diplomacy and International Law, targeting government officials, students, and other stakeholders.

Aligned with its strategic goal to expand outreach and communication, MDPU is seeking to strengthen its communication efforts through enhanced strategies and innovative products. The traineeship aims to support this initiative.

Background

As MDPU continues to expand its training portfolio—including new Master’s Programs, online courses, and immersion programs—it recognizes the importance of strengthening its outreach and communication activities to reach broader audiences and promote its programs effectively. The traineeship offers an excellent opportunity for individuals eager to contribute to the promotion of multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation through creative and strategic communication.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Programme Officer of UNITAR’s Multilateral Diplomacy Programme, the trainee will assist in the development and design of external communication products, including social media posts, flyers, landing pages, websites, emails, testimonials, and videos. The trainee will support the team in creating and editing communication materials, ensuring alignment with UNITAR’s branding guidelines, and contributing to the development of communication strategies aimed at promoting MDPU’s programs and outreach efforts.

Key tasks may include:

  • Supporting the development of MDPU’s external communication materials, such as brochures, advertisements, email campaigns, web content, and videos.
  • Updating and maintaining content on landing pages and websites.
  • Reviewing and editing news articles, event summaries, and program overviews.
  • Developing communication plans and schedules to highlight upcoming training activities, events, and initiatives.
  • Conducting research on promotional opportunities and target audiences.
  • Assisting in outreach activities such as participation in student fairs and related events, managing related logistics, budgets, and materials.
  • Monitoring MDPU’s LinkedIn Alumni Group and drafting content for review.
  • Editing videos and creating subtitles using tools like Adobe Premiere Pro or Canva.
  • Taking photographs and filming short videos during events and training sessions.
  • Managing email campaigns and mass mailings via platforms like Mailjet.

The specific tasks assigned may evolve during the traineeship to better align with MDPU’s priorities and strategic focus.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the traineeship, the trainee will be able to:

Dates and Duration

  • Start Date: End of June or early July (exact date to be confirmed with the selected candidate)
  • Duration: Four to six months
  • The traineeship is full-time, with a standard five-day workweek. Requests for part-time arrangements may be considered upon prior agreement.

Minimum Requirements

Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate program in communication, public relations, graphic design, video production/editing, marketing, international relations, or a related field. Recent graduates must have graduated within the past two years and be able to commence within that period.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in the United Nations, UNITAR, and multilateral diplomacy.
  • Strong interest in communications, outreach, and digital media activities.
  • Excellent writing skills in English; proficiency in other UN languages, especially French, is an advantage.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with online tools, word processing, spreadsheets, and internet research.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the capacity to prioritize and handle multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Attention to detail, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to adapt to a multicultural, fast-paced environment.

Additional Skills (Highly advantageous):
Knowledge of graphic design (Adobe Creative Suite), video editing (Premiere Pro), content management tools (Trello, Hootsuite, Notion), and social media platforms.
