Remote/Home Based Internship: UN Foundation is Hiring for a Social Media Intern Position ($20 Per Hour)

The United Nations Foundation is excited to welcome a highly motivated and creative Intern, Social Media, to join its dynamic and energetic Global Communications and Engagement team. This paid internship offers a valuable opportunity for aspiring communications professionals to gain hands-on experience in digital content creation, social media management, and strategic storytelling, all while contributing to the Foundation’s mission of advancing the United Nations’ impactful work worldwide.

From May 27th, 2025, to August 29th, 2025, the intern will be engaged in a vibrant environment that fosters learning, innovation, and meaningful contribution. With an hourly compensation rate of $17.50 to $20.00, this role is ideal for students eager to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, develop new skills, and make a tangible impact through social media channels.

The Role’s Core Purpose

The Intern, Social Media, will be an integral part of the Foundation’s social media efforts, supporting the planning, creation, management, and analysis of content across multiple digital platforms. This role is designed for a creative, multi-skilled individual who is eager to learn and grow in the fast-paced world of digital communications. The intern will work closely with colleagues across departments to craft compelling narratives, engage diverse audiences, and help amplify the stories of the United Nations and the Foundation’s initiatives.

This position offers a unique chance to develop expertise in social media strategy, content production, and analytics, all while contributing to global conversations on critical issues like climate change, gender equality, and global health. The internship emphasizes hands-on involvement, providing opportunities to experiment with different formats—including writing, design, video, and research—while gaining insights into how digital platforms shape public understanding and engagement.

Essential Functions: Supporting Digital Content and Engagement

  • Collaborative Content Planning: Work with the Global Communications and Engagement team to support the development of content calendars, brainstorm creative ideas, and assist in the execution of campaigns aligned with UN Foundation priorities.
  • Content Creation & Copywriting: Draft engaging posts and captions tailored for various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Threads, X (formerly Twitter), and WhatsApp. Ensure messaging is clear, compelling, and aligned with organizational voice and style.
  • Research & Audience Insights: Conduct research on current trends, audience preferences, and relevant topics to inform content development. Stay updated on issues related to the Foundation’s policy priorities, such as climate action, gender equality, and health initiatives.
  • Monitoring & Listening: Track conversations, monitor social media channels for trending topics, issues, or emerging opportunities for engagement, and share insights with the team to inform real-time responses and strategic adjustments.
  • Data Collection & Reporting: Assist in gathering engagement metrics, analyzing performance data, and preparing reports that evaluate the effectiveness of social media campaigns. Use insights to recommend improvements and refine content strategies.
  • Supporting Multimedia Content: Based on interest or prior experience, support the creation or editing of videos, simple graphics, or design elements to enhance social media posts and campaigns.
  • Other Duties: Assist with additional tasks as assigned, including attending team meetings, participating in brainstorming sessions, or supporting special projects related to digital communications.

Selection Criteria: What We’re Looking For

  • Academic Background: Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited college or university, preferably in fields such as communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related disciplines.
  • Exceptional Writing Skills: Demonstrated ability to craft clear, engaging, and accurate digital content tailored for social media audiences.
  • Familiarity with Social Media Tools: Experience working with social media management platforms like Hootsuite, Buffer, or native platform tools is a plus.
  • Design & Multimedia Skills: Interest or experience with photo editing, graphic design, or video editing tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, iMovie, etc.) is desirable.
  • Digital Trends & Best Practices: A keen understanding of current social media trends, platform-specific best practices, and digital storytelling techniques.
  • Eagerness to Learn: Demonstrated enthusiasm for applying academic knowledge in a professional setting, with a desire to expand skills across content creation, analytics, and strategy.
  • Attention to Detail & Initiative: Strong organizational skills, precision in work, and the ability to independently propose new ideas or projects that add value to the team.
  • Teamwork & Independence: Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and work independently when needed, managing time efficiently within the maximum of 29 hours per week.
  • Technical Requirements: Must have a personal laptop and reliable internet access. Authorization to work in the United States is required.
