The United Nations Foundation is seeking a talented and dynamic Communications Manager specializing in Media and Content to join its vibrant Global Communications and Engagement team in Washington, DC. Position Overview: Amplifying Global Impact Through Strategic Communications
As Communications Manager, Media and Content, the successful candidate will serve as a key storyteller and media strategist within the Foundation. They will harness their editorial savvy and creative flair to craft compelling narratives that resonate across multiple platforms—from blog articles and social media posts to press releases and website content. This role requires a nuanced understanding of UN and UN Foundation priorities, translating complex international issues into accessible, engaging stories that inform, inspire, and mobilize action.
Collaborating closely with the Communications Officer and under the leadership of the Director of Media and Content, this individual will develop and implement strategic communications plans that support the Foundation’s mission. They will be the go-to expert for media engagement, responsible for pitching stories, managing media inquiries, and supporting leadership in media appearances and interviews. The position also involves working with internal teams and external experts to ensure content aligns with organizational goals, style guides, and current media trends.
Key Responsibilities: Driving Content Creation and Media Engagement
- Editorial Planning & Strategy: Partner with the Director of Media and Content to maintain a vibrant editorial calendar, develop creative content ideas, and shape media strategies that align with organizational priorities and global issues.
- Content Development: Write, edit, and oversee a wide array of content formats, including blog posts, newsletters, social media content, press materials, messaging guides, and marketing collateral. Ensure all content is accurate, engaging, and tailored for diverse audiences and platforms.
- Relationship Building: Cultivate and maintain relationships with subject matter experts, advocacy groups, and media contacts to source insights, develop compelling stories, and secure media coverage that amplifies the Foundation’s impact on issues such as climate change, global health, gender equality, multilateralism, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Research & Fact-Checking: Conduct thorough research, interviews, and background checks to produce factually accurate content that communicates complex international topics clearly and effectively.
- Media Strategy & Outreach: Proactively pitch media stories, op-eds, and expert commentary to elevate the Foundation’s voice. Support media engagement efforts, including preparing briefing materials, talking points, and messaging guides for leadership and issue experts.
- Media Monitoring & Response: Manage incoming media inquiries, monitor coverage, and provide strategic recommendations. Support the Foundation’s reputation management by ensuring timely and appropriate responses.
- Coordination & Collaboration: Work closely with creative, design, and content teams to develop integrated campaigns and ensure consistency in tone, style, and messaging across all channels.
- Stay Current & Innovate: Regularly review industry trends and best practices in media and storytelling, sharing insights and innovative ideas to keep the Foundation’s communications fresh and effective.
Qualifications & Experience: The Ideal Candidate
- Experience: Five to eight years of progressive experience in communications, media relations, or journalism, ideally within a global affairs, NGO, or political context.
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Political Science, Communications, International Affairs, or a related field.
- Expertise: Familiarity with United Nations policies, multilateral issues, and global development topics such as climate change, health, human rights, and gender equality is highly preferred.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills across various formats.
- Strong news judgment and understanding of the media landscape.
- Proficiency with media monitoring and outreach tools such as Cision, Meltwater, or TV Eyes.
- Ability to craft strategic messaging and adapt tone for different audiences and platforms.
- Experience working collaboratively with subject matter experts, creative teams, and senior leadership.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire confidence and build relationships internally and externally.
- Flexibility and adaptability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Additional Requirements: Must be able to provide verifiable writing samples, including bylined articles or features. A writing test will be part of the interview process. Up to 10% domestic and international travel may be required.
