International Rescue Committee (IRC) is Hiring for Summer Program Assistant ($22.80 to $23.60 Per Hour)
The International Rescue Committee (IRC), a globally renowned humanitarian organization founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, is seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to join its team as a Summer Program Assistant in Oakland, California. As one of the world’s largest INGOs, the IRC works in over 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities, providing critical support to those affected by conflict and disaster, helping them rebuild their lives with dignity, safety, and hope.
This part-time, hybrid role offers a unique chance for someone interested in nonprofit program development, volunteer management, and community engagement to gain hands-on experience while making a tangible difference in the lives of refugees, immigrants, and displaced communities.
Role Overview
The Summer Program Assistant will play a pivotal role in designing and launching a regional volunteer program aimed at enhancing the capacity of the IRC in Northern California. This position is ideal for individuals eager to develop skills in program planning, community outreach, and nonprofit operations. The successful candidate will research best practices, create resources, and establish processes that promote meaningful volunteer engagement across multiple IRC offices in the region.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct research and benchmark volunteer programs at other IRC locations and similar organizations to inform the development of the NorCal volunteer initiative.
- Assist in designing a comprehensive volunteer program framework, including application processes, onboarding procedures, engagement strategies, and offboarding.
- Develop recruitment materials such as position descriptions, outreach flyers, and informational packets to attract diverse volunteer groups.
- Support the creation of a volunteer handbook that clearly outlines expectations, policies, and procedures, along with a Standard Operating Procedure to facilitate program management, including intern involvement.
- Build and maintain a database of potential volunteer partners, including corporate, faith-based, and university organizations.
- Help set up systems for tracking volunteer participation and evaluating program impact.
- Provide strategic recommendations for sustaining volunteer engagement and ensuring long-term retention.
Learning Opportunities
Participants will gain valuable insights into nonprofit volunteer program development and community engagement strategies. They will hone project management and strategic planning skills within a humanitarian context, understanding how volunteer efforts support refugee resettlement, economic empowerment, and community wellness initiatives. Additionally, this role provides exposure to nonprofit operations, including partnership cultivation, community outreach, and organizational development.
Candidate Profile
Ideal applicants are individuals with a keen interest in volunteer management, program development, or nonprofit work, coupled with a genuine passion for supporting refugees, immigrants, and marginalized communities. Strong organizational and research skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively. Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal—are vital, as is familiarity with tools like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Experience with online design platforms such as Canva is a plus. While prior volunteering or work with refugee or immigrant communities is preferred, it is not a requirement.
Work Environment & Logistics
- The position is fully remote, requiring the candidate to use their own laptop and equipment.
- Occasional travel to the Oakland office may be necessary.
- Candidates must have a dedicated workspace capable of supporting productive work during scheduled hours.
- The role is contingent upon successfully completing a background check, conducted at no cost to the applicant.
Compensation & Benefits
The hourly pay range for this role is $22.80 to $23.60, based on experience and location. IRC offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, holidays, medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan with employer matching, disability and life insurance, and access to Employee Assistance Programs supporting mental health and well-being.
