Background

In an increasingly interconnected and complex world, it is essential that students acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to effectively navigate the multifaceted challenges of the 21st century. These challenges include climate change, social inequality, resource depletion, and global health issues, all of which demand innovative, sustainable solutions. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has emerged as a critical approach to equip learners with the competencies required to address these global issues, fostering not only academic achievement but also developing vital 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability.

Research consistently demonstrates a strong positive correlation between sustainable development education and improved student performance, engagement, and capacity to think critically about global issues. Despite this compelling evidence, the integration of transformative ESD into mainstream education remains inconsistent and insufficient worldwide. A comprehensive UNESCO survey of approximately 58,000 teachers revealed that while over 80% expressed a keen interest in teaching for sustainable development, more than half faced significant obstacles in doing so. The primary barriers cited included a lack of familiarity with effective pedagogical methodologies suitable for ESD and the absence of adequate training opportunities.

Furthermore, a review of global education systems indicates that only about 8% of countries have successfully embedded sustainable development principles into their teacher education curricula (GEMR, 2016). This gap highlights a critical need for targeted interventions to support teachers and school leaders in integrating sustainability concepts into their pedagogical practices.

Recognizing this challenge, Global Schools (GS) has committed to fostering transformative change within classrooms by promoting the integration of sustainable development concepts into teacher training programs. The aim is to empower educators with the knowledge, skills, and pedagogical tools necessary to embed sustainability into everyday teaching practice, thereby enhancing student learning outcomes and preparing learners to become responsible global citizens.

The Specifics

At the heart of GS’s efforts is its flagship initiative, the GS Advocates Program. This innovative, comprehensive training and advocacy program spans six months and is designed for educators and school leaders working across primary and secondary education systems around the world. The program’s development was informed by extensive consultation, including surveys of 220 local sustainability champions and over 40 educators, ensuring that the training is relevant, practical, and tailored to diverse educational contexts.

The program offers a rich curriculum comprising more than 30 lectures, original readings, and a series of rigorous assessments to deepen participants’ understanding of sustainable development principles and their application in educational settings. Additionally, the Global Schools Advocates Toolkit—a collection of 17 supporting documents—serves as a practical resource for teachers. This toolkit guides educators through a structured action-research methodology, enabling them to design, implement, and evaluate initiatives that incorporate ESD into their classrooms and school activities.

The program’s impact is evidenced by its reach: within just one year, teachers and school leaders who completed the training collectively engaged nearly 108,112 students across over 7,300 classroom lessons and activities focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program also employs a train-the-trainers model, enabling Advocates to cascade their knowledge and skills by training over 12,300 additional teachers—magnifying its reach and sustainability.

The Experience

Participants in the GS Advocates Program report significant gains in their understanding and confidence regarding sustainable development and education:

  • 22% increase in knowledge about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and related concepts.
  • 97% of Advocates agree that the training provided them with new ideas and strategies to implement in their classrooms.
  • 98% believe their role as an Advocate has increased awareness of sustainable development among their students.
  • 36% increase in their overall knowledge of ESD principles and practices.
  • An overwhelming 98% of Advocates would recommend the program to colleagues, emphasizing its value and relevance.
  • 99% believe that their engagement as an Advocate has positively influenced their students’ understanding and attitudes towards sustainability.

Note: These data points are based on feedback gathered during the first cohort in 2021, reflecting the program’s initial impact.

Benefits for Schools and Students

The GS Advocates Program not only enhances individual teacher capacity but also leads to tangible improvements at the school level. Over the course of five months, Advocates have reported and observed notable changes within their schools, including:

For Schools:

  • 62% of schools where Advocates work have improved their waste management and litter control practices, leading to cleaner, more sustainable school environments.
  • 59% have incorporated sustainability as a strategic priority or part of their school vision, embedding SDGs into their long-term planning.
  • 56% have launched extracurricular initiatives aimed at promoting SDG awareness, such as eco-clubs, community clean-up projects, and sustainability fairs.
  • 52% have integrated Education for Sustainable Development into staff development programs, ensuring that all educators are equipped to teach sustainability concepts effectively.

These changes demonstrate how targeted training and advocacy can foster a culture of sustainability within educational institutions, influencing both policy and practice, and inspiring students to become active participants in creating sustainable futures.

This expanded narrative provides a comprehensive overview of the importance of ESD, the challenges faced globally, and how the Global Schools Advocates Program addresses these issues through targeted training, resource development, and practical implementation, ultimately fostering transformative change in classrooms and communities worldwide.
