Organizational Setting

The Information Technology Division (CSI) of FAO is responsible for managing all IT-related activities within the organization. It plays a pivotal role in defining FAO’s IT policies, providing strategic advice on IT architecture, governance, and operational matters while ensuring compliance across the organization. CSI is also tasked with protecting FAO’s information assets, ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability, as well as facilitating the delivery of core IT services necessary for the organization’s global operations.


Reporting Lines

The selected candidate will report directly to the Information Technology Officer and will function as a Web Developer within FAO’s IT Division (CSI). This role involves working as part of an agile web development team tasked with designing and building high-quality corporate websites as requested by business owners. In this capacity, the Web Developer will closely collaborate with the Office of Communications (OCC) to adapt and maintain existing digital templates and web interfaces for various FAO publications.


Key Responsibilities

The Web Developer will be responsible for:

  • Developing, testing, and debugging FAO websites using the corporate Web Content Management System (SiteFinity).
  • Following best practices and organizational needs in developing WCMS components.
  • Participating in customizing templates and extensions for both corporate and thematic websites.
  • Configuring and customizing corporate pages, particularly ensuring compliance with mobile device standards.
  • Creating new digital templates and web interfaces that align with FAO’s corporate branding guidelines and editorial policy.
  • Populating digital templates with multilingual versions of publications across the six official languages of the organization (English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Arabic).
  • Modifying and maintaining existing digital templates following corporate publishing guidelines.
  • Preparing technical documentation as necessary and performing other related duties as required.

Candidate Assessment Criteria

Candidates will be evaluated against the following minimum requirements:

Minimum Requirements

  • For Consultants: A university degree in Computer Science, IT Engineering, Professional Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline with at least two years of experience in web development.
  • For PSA: A university degree or specific technical specialization in the aforementioned fields with two years of relevant work experience in web development.
  • Language Proficiency: A working knowledge of English, French, or Spanish; knowledge of additional FAO official languages is an asset.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Experience in modern web development principles, including Responsive Design and Progressive Web Apps.
  • Knowledge and work experience with WCMS tools such as SiteFinity, Drupal, or Typo3.
  • Proficiency in HTML5, XHTML, JavaScript, CSS3/SASS, Bootstrap, as well as various frameworks and libraries.
  • Understanding of web development languages and primary frameworks.

Selection Criteria

  • Familiarity with modern WCMS tools.
  • Relevance and depth of knowledge in JavaScript and CSS frameworks.
