Position Overview
The UN Foundation is looking for a talented and creative writer who possesses not only superior storytelling abilities but also an in-depth understanding of international affairs and UN priority issues. Reporting to the Director of Media and Content, the Communications Officer will wield their skills to educate and inspire diverse audiences, ranging from journalists and policymakers to the general public.
Key Responsibilities
The Communications Officer will play a crucial role in driving the UN Foundation’s outreach through various essential functions, which include:
Content Creation and Production
- Writing Across Formats: Produce high-quality content in multiple formats, including blog posts, newsletters, social media updates, press releases, and marketing materials.
- Editing Excellence: Serve as a proofreader and copyeditor for technical content related to key themes such as climate change, gender equality, and human rights.
- Storytelling: Curate and narrate compelling stories that resonate with audiences and drive engagement.
Media Relations and Engagement
- Media Portfolio Support: Assist in managing all facets of media relations, which includes drafting press releases and identifying opportunities to enhance media engagement.
- Proactive Outreach: Build and maintain robust media contact lists while monitoring media mentions and compiling daily press clips.
- Trend Analysis: Analyze media coverage data to inform future communications strategies.
Collaboration and Relationship Building
- Partnership with Experts: Build strong relationships with subject matter experts, collaborating closely to shape content on a variety of global issues.
- Creative Content Development: Pitch innovative ideas for engaging content that can be utilized across UN Foundation’s communication platforms.
Staying Informed
- Media Trends Knowledge: Stay up to date with the latest trends and relevant news within the UN space, ensuring the foundation’s messaging is timely and impactful.
- Content Review and Approval: Support the timely review and editing of content, maintaining high standards for all outgoing communication materials.
Selection Criteria
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Education and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Political Science, Communications, International Affairs, or a related field.
- A minimum of three years of proven writing experience, with at least two years focused on climate change, gender equality, multilateralism, and/or human rights issues.
Skills and Abilities
- Outstanding Writing Skills: Exceptional digital content writing skills that demonstrate accuracy, creativity, and the ability to adapt to various formats.
- Analytical Proficiency: Ability to distill complex data into insightful analytical reports and recommendations.
- Familiarity with Media Tools: Experience with tools like Cision, Meltwater, and TV Eyes, showcasing a strong understanding of the media landscape.
- Collaboration Skills: Ability to engage with senior leaders, designers, and producers, adapting editorial voice according to project needs.
- Project Management: Comfort with handling complex projects and fast-paced timelines while effectively collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
Other Requirements
- Willingness to undertake up to 10% of domestic or international travel.
- Candidates must provide verifiable writing samples and will participate in a writing test as part of the recruitment process.
