The Role: Data and Statistics Intern

As a Data and Statistics Intern, you will join the Policy Division’s Research and Data Section, where you’ll collaborate with a team of experienced professionals dedicated to leading UN Women’s research agenda. Your contribution will directly support the production of high-profile publications such as “Progress on the SDGs: The Annual Gender Snapshot 2025 Report,” a crucial resource for tracking global progress on gender equality.

Key Responsibilities

In this dynamic role, the intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks that form the backbone of UN Women’s research initiatives:

  • Research Support: Assist in literature reviews and the preparation of background research documents for the “Progress on the SDGs: The Annual Gender Snapshot 2025”. Your research will form the basis for evidence-based conclusions that inform policy and programmatic decisions.
  • Data Visualization: Collaborate with report authors to create and refine data visualizations for inclusion in the report. This includes using statistical programming packages such as R and essential software tools like Excel and Power BI to deliver impactful insights visually.
  • Fact-Checking: Play a critical role in the fact-checking process by utilizing existing code scripts in STATA or R to extract indicators from large international datasets, including the Demographic and Health Surveys from USAID and the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys from UNICEF.
  • Project Management Support: Contribute to general project management by assisting with documentation, organizing information, and ensuring that deliverables are met on time.

Qualifications

To be considered for this internship, candidates should meet the following educational and language requirements:

  • Education: Must have university studies in relevant disciplines such as Public Policy, Economics, Statistics, Social Sciences, or related fields. Candidates should either be:
  • Enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent)
  • In the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level)
  • A recent graduate (within the past two years) who can commence the internship shortly after graduation
  • Enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program that includes this internship as a requirement.
  • Language Proficiency: Candidates must have excellent communication skills in English (written and oral). Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.

Compensation and Application Instructions

UN Women recognizes the challenges faced by interns and offers a stipend to those who are not receiving financial support from other sources. This stipend is meant to partially subsidize basic living costs throughout the three-month internship.
