Call for Consultant: Podcast Production for CIVICUS Voices (1 Season)

Introduction

CIVICUS is a distinguished global civil society alliance comprised of over 11,000 members across 175 countries. Our mission is to amplify the voices of civil society and champion the essential work that activists, organizations, and communities undertake to defend human rights, particularly in restrictive environments. With an increasing demand for engaging audio content, between 2021 and 2025, CIVICUS has successfully launched 5 seasons of its innovative podcast series, CIVICUS Voices. This podcast has become vital in showcasing the powerful stories of changemakers committed to civil rights and social justice.

Building on our previous seasons, Season 6 will consist of 6 episodes that delve deep into the theme of the power of protests. We invite proposals from experienced audio podcast producers and hosts to join us in this endeavor. The ideal candidate will possess specialized technical skills in sound engineering and comprehensive experience in podcast or radio program production.

Key Responsibilities

The selected consultant will be responsible for a variety of crucial tasks, which include but are not limited to:

  1. Developing Story Outline and Scriptwriting: Collaborate with CIVICUS to formulate a compelling narrative framework for each episode, leveraging an established show template to enhance consistency and quality.
  2. Script Editing: Write and refine scripts for each podcast episode, ensuring they are engaging, informative, and reflect the overarching theme of the series.
  3. Conducting Interviews: Actively gather content through interviews with CIVICUS staff, members, and partners. This will involve preparing questions and discussion points that align with the episode themes.
  4. Recording, Editing, and Producing Episodes:
  • Determine the best locations and formats for recording interviews.
  • Conduct recordings of interviews and relevant pre-recorded materials.
  • Edit audio files meticulously to ensure high-quality sound, including trimming raw content, arranging audio effectively, integrating sound effects, and preparing the final product for release.
  1. Hosting the Podcast: Serve as the official voice of the show, conducting interviews and providing both introduction and closing remarks for each episode. It is preferable to have the producer also take on hosting responsibilities, but proposals without hosting capacity will also be considered.
  2. Publishing and Promotion:
  • Upload episodes to selected podcast platforms according to a predetermined schedule.
  • Ensure all relevant details, such as episode titles, descriptions, publish dates, and episode numbers, are accurately included.
  • Collaborate with the CIVICUS team to devise a comprehensive promotional strategy for the podcast and its individual episodes on social media platforms.

Scope and Goal

The overarching goal of this consultancy is to collaborate with the CIVICUS communications team to produce a minimum of six podcast episodes for Season 6.

Specific Deliverables:

  • Collaborate on developing episode outlines and segment structures based on pre-existing story planning sheets.
  • Conduct initial planning sessions to explore story ideas, followed by drafting detailed scripts for each episode that create a coherent narrative throughout the series.
  • Conduct interviews as per the episode outlines and gather relevant content as directed by the CIVICUS team.
  • Record and deftly edit the episodes, maintaining high standards of audio quality and engaging storytelling.
  • Publish completed episodes to respective podcast libraries and ensure a structured promotional plan is in place to maximize reach.

CIVICUS Support

CIVICUS pledges to provide the following support to the consultant:

  • Access to an established podcast platform hosted on Buzzsprout.
  • Audio and multi-media templates that have been utilized in previous podcast seasons.
  • Resource materials including potential themes, episode ideas, and contact information for prospective interviewees.
  • Timely feedback on draft episode outlines and scripts to facilitate quality assurance.

Duration of Work: The consultancy will commence in early May and continue through the end of June, with an expected completion date of 30 June 2025.
