Key Responsibilities
The selected Senior Research Specialist will work under the general supervision of the UNRISD Director, with responsibilities that include but are not limited to:
- Research Development: Conceptualizing and leading research projects centered on Environment and Climate Justice with a specific emphasis on just transition. This will involve situating research within UNRISD’s broader strategic framework.
- Strategic Engagement: Acting as the principal liaison for UNRISD with the UN system and other stakeholders on environment and climate justice issues, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission.
- Project Management: Designing and managing research endeavors, which includes identifying and collaborating with research partners, organizing meetings and conferences, supervising consultants, and ensuring high-quality outputs.
- Publication and Dissemination: Producing well-researched publications, articles, and policy briefs tailored to various audiences, including policymakers, academics, and practitioners.
- Fundraising Contributions: Actively contributing to fundraising activities to secure resources for research projects while supporting the institute’s overall fundraising efforts.
- Networking: Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with stakeholders across the UN, governmental bodies, multilateral organizations, civil society, and academic networks.
- Policy Advice: Based on in-depth research and insights, providing technical assistance and policy advice to UN departments, national and local policymakers, and other relevant institutions.
- Representation: Representing UNRISD at national and international meetings, workshops, and conferences, articulating the importance of environment and climate justice in sustainable development discussions.
- Collaboration: Regularly collaborating with the UNRISD team and communications officers to ensure that research findings are effectively communicated and disseminated.
Ideal Candidate Profile

- Education: An advanced degree in social sciences or economics, with a focus on environment/climate change linked to development. A PhD is strongly preferred.
- Experience: A minimum of ten years in development research, particularly in the social and sustainable development sectors, preferably with a focus on climate justice. Proven experience in fundraising, project management, and supervision of research initiatives is also essential.
- Publication Record: A strong track record of academic publications in relevant fields is critical, demonstrating both depth and breadth of expertise in areas pertinent to the institute’s work.
- Field Research Experience: Research experience in developing countries is a necessity, as it enhances contextual understanding of the local factors influencing climate justice.
