Position Summary
The Statistical Partnerships and External Engagement Intern will become an integral member of the Statistics, Data Science, and Survey Section (SDSS) within the Global Data Service (GDS) at UNHCR Copenhagen. This internship offers an invaluable opportunity to engage with an array of stakeholders to bolster UNHCR’s strategic efforts in improving statistical partnerships and enhancing data quality related to forcibly displaced and stateless populations.
By joining this team, the intern will contribute to pivotal efforts including the development of various reporting products, direct collaboration with external partners, and participation in capacity-building initiatives aimed at improving data collection strategies concerning forcibly displaced children.
Responsibilities
As part of the internship, the selected candidate will:
- Engage actively in efforts to fortify UNHCR’s strategic statistical partnerships, contributing to the initiatives of both the International Data Alliance for Children on the Move (IDAC) and the Expert Group on Refugee, IDP, and Statelessness Statistics (EGRISS).
- Conduct research and facilitate the creation of tailored capacity-building plans to enhance data collection on forcibly displaced and stateless children.
- Collaborate on drafting thematic reports regarding the Forced Displacement Survey (FDS) and liaise with the FDS team as necessary.
- Coordinate and support UNHCR’s Data Community Hub, focusing on IDAC, through collaboration with a range of stakeholders to ensure effective delivery.
- Participate in events related to the International Forum on Migration Statistics, helping promote the visibility and representation of forcibly displaced individuals within broader migration statistics dialogues.
- Organize meetings, documenting their outcomes through notes and minute-taking, ensuring effective follow-up communication with all participants.
- Undertake additional tasks as assigned in alignment with team objectives and contributions to the section’s goals.
Qualifications
To qualify for this internship, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Be a recent graduate (completed studies within the last two years) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate program at an accredited university or institution recognized by IAU/UNESCO.
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate study in a field pertinent to UNHCR’s work.
- Have not exceeded the maximum cumulative internship period with UNHCR, which is 8 months for full-time and 12 months for part-time internships.
Preferred Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Proficiency in English at a B2 level or higher.
- A Master’s degree in relevant fields such as Statistics, Demography, Empirical Sociology, Economics, Social Science, Political Science, or International Development.
- Experience in producing written materials such as reports and research papers, especially those involving statistical analysis.
- Strong communication skills, capable of engaging with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience in multi-stakeholder project coordination.
- A demonstrated interest in official statistics, humanitarian work, and related areas.
- Initiative and excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
Working Conditions
- The internship is a full-time role requiring 40 hours per week, typically from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Interns without external financial support will receive a stipend to assist with food, transportation, and living expenses.
- Interns traveling from outside the duty station will be reimbursed for economy-class travel costs, subject to prior approval from the hiring office.
Obligations
Interns are responsible for securing their required visas, residence permits, and associated costs, as well as obtaining medical clearance, health insurance, and ensuring compliance with any relevant taxation obligations. Proof of health insurance and a medical certificate of fitness for work and travel are mandatory prerequisites for participation in the internship program.
